[Mod] Write on Paper [0.1.1] [memorandum]

by Mossmanikin » Post

Spoiler
Like every mod by me, this is just the result of some what-if-thinking and try-and-error-coding.
Actually I was working on my version of the fishing mod when I thought: wouldn't it be cool to catch a message in a bottle?
I decided: yes it would.
Do we have bottles?
Yes!
Do we have messages?
Not really.
Do we have a problem here?
Dunno if we have, but I have.

So here's the reason why I started this mod.
Wanted to say this, but it matters not.
This is a small thingy. You can write something on paper.

Writing and reading a letter

How?
Well, place a piece of paper (the default) on a surface (preferably a table), there will appear a piece of paper (node), right click on it, write whatever you wish and press enter, the piece of paper will become a letter (node), pick it up (dig the node) and you'll get a letter (item).
Use the letter (left click) and there will appear a chat message saying what's written on it.
You can place the letter again if you like.

Didn't find a limit of words or lines. If you can find a limit please post.

Editing a letter

To edit a letter that's already been written you need an eraser (tool). First leftcklick, then rightclick on a letter(node) while holding an eraser to open the menu where you can edit the message.
You can only change what's written on a piece of paper if it is either not signed, or signed with your playername (in singleplayer your name's singleplayer). Be careful to spell the name right.
You can sign the letter using any name you want. Did it that way so you can use signed letters for an adventure map or for role playing.

Message in a bottle

You can create a message in a bottle by "digging" a letter while holding a glass bottle (vessels, part of vanilla minetest).
By using the message-in-a-bottle (leftclick) you place the letter inside and you'll get an empty bottle back.
You can also place the message-in-a-bottle (but isn't that decorative).

Spoiler
You can craft an eraser out of bread (farming), honey comb (bees), wax (candles) or raw latex (technic).

I'm thinking about adding books as a dependency, because of the pencil, but I'm not sure about this yet.

Thanks. :)
I hope it works, although I see no reason why it shouldn't.

Neat.
Maybe one day you could actually see the words while holding the paper.

No, but that could be interesting, if someone could make the Slenderman...
Do you mean just the woods, or the whole 2-part storyline (friend goes missing, looks in wood for clues, friend has been taken by Slender etc)

for slender-man i was thinking the hero-brine mod could be adapted and for the story i have no-idea (never played the slender game) and the forest would auto generate but so the player doesn't leave the set game zone an obsidian box (obsidian resembles the night)

I thought of that too, but somehow I like the way it works.
It gives a certain text adventure flair.

I'm not that familiar with the slander man story, but I like the idea of using letters to tell a story, if that's what you're talking about.

Unfortunately I only have version 1 of that mod.
In singleplayer it's no problem to put a letter in a mailbox and take it out. All the text is still there.

Do you have a working download link for version 4 of mailbox?
I'd love to check it.

No i do not. I don't use it either. Also, i would prefer not having the send function. That way you have to put it in the mailbox yourself or give it to the mail man (role playing). A very simple mod that adds a mailbox with a red flag thing (to show if there is new mail). Only owner of the mailbox can dig mailbox and see(rightclick) what's in the inbox.

You know what! I'm making this. Should be done in a few hours.

EDIT:

I'm sure you are familiar with the placing issue that there is atm. Try placing the letter against a wall and it will remove the node above the node to which the player is pointing. Anyone knows how to fix this?

EDIT:

Finished inbox mod
