It is probably just me being stupid, so I might be wrong, but if it is the piston and the power plant that don't connect vertically, and not the mese blocks then this mesecon should connect to the mese block right?: Mesecon wire can connect diagonally vertically, ie. in the direction {x=0,y=-1,z=1}...

The mese blocks connect vertically to each other but not to anything else. In case you want to connect something with mese blocks, then you must connect them horizontally! The pressure plate code could indeed be improved, parts of the code are 8 years old. Someone could make a PR.
