Try throwing it into `mcimport` and see what happens?

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

Yes, we better get to know the licenses of these engines a little better: Spring-GNU Version 2 Panda 3D-Revised BSD Xenko-MIT License Luxe-MIT License Godot-MIT License IrrlichtBAW-Apache License 2.0 Ogre3D-MIT License What's more important is OS support (android, linux, windows, MacOS, possibly iO...

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

the era of general purpose open source graphics engines is over. This is a good way of putting it. Irrlicht has done well - it allowed MT to remain extremely small. That's always been a bonus. With today's computing devices, it's less and less of a bonus every year. People would still install Minet...

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

Isn’t it pretty clear at this point that Minetest will live and die with Irrlicht? I honestly don't think that this is the case. I doubt that Minetest would die at all, for the very simple reason that Irrlicht effectively already is dead, and somehow MT lives on still. The thing that worries me is ...

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

Hypothetically - It would really suck if IrrlichtBAW perishes for the same reasons that Irrlicht dies. For that very reason, It should be a well-supported decision with multiple people committing to doing the work (even if it takes a long time, obviously) so that there isn't any debate about the dec...

Re: There needs to be a server command for producing light.

Tangent: Wielded light should be merged with minetest game imo. And I feel like the core team should be taking apart the big multimod projects and breaking them down into plugins so people can mix and match aspects without having to go whole hog. This is a tangential goal of http://github.com/minet...

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

I think proper lighting an physics are more important than allowing to load new assets on runtime. That is important, but I wouldn't sacrifice the fact that MT can send assets to the client when it connects to the server. Then you're just making another MC with better lighting, and killing the one ...

Re: [mod]skybox[skybox]

Uh, Minetest 5.0.1, the sky and background change to default blue after a few seconds. Any clue why? The logfile has some warnings about missing dependencies of homedecor, advtrains and ambience, but nothing helpful. I can't reproduce this. Maybe disable other mods (ambience?!) one by one and see w...

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

I think one of the next major pieces that MT needs is to expand on the ability of users to add new content dynamically in the game, and for that the engine needs to support loading new assets as the game is running. Right now this is a limitation of Minetest - it needs a server restart to add a text...

Re: Public Remote Media Server Project

I would assume that this involves the common storage vs CPU trade-off - if you optimize (or even compress using for example gzip) your PNGs, you of course have less bytes to transfer, but decoding also becomes harder and takes it's time... Theoretically, but I doubt this is measurable. Most PNG's a...

Re: Public Remote Media Server Project

but I have many changed images and have run optipng over many of them I would generally advise against doing this, for the very very simple reason that it usually doesn't buy you much speed anyway. If the size different is significant, it's worth submitting the changes back to the upstream mod so e...

Re: Convert Minecraft maps to Minetest worlds

I found the problem with my edits of map_content.txt. It was a default setting for my KDE text writers. My text writers (Kate and Kwrite) both default to a soft tab, which I guess converts the white space from a tab to spaces. So now I have changed the setting and my edits work. yeah, it just dawne...

Thank you for the reply. I have been running ./mcimport.sh in terminal after changing directory into the mcimport-master directory. It is the same directory that the map_content.txt is located in. Re: Convert Minecraft maps to Minetest worlds

Hi, I have been having trouble getting this to work on my computers. On the three maps I tried, I get empty worlds. I have one computer on Debian 10 with KDE, and it has minetest 5.1-dev, python3.7, and zenity installed. I even removed python 2.7 so there would be no conflicts. Since it wasn't work...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

I like where this discussion is going. Honestly, I give you credit for ignoring me and doing it anyway. There is really no better way to learn sometimes than to do something even though people told you it was unwise, and then making up your mind afterwards. And maybe, especially in this case, we're ...

because you're effectively implementing the entire protocol stack yourself ...and I'm proud of that. This increases both educational value and performance. As bonus I do not require an additional file server. This is something I see inexperienced software developers do, and it's a terrible attitude...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

A use case I could see would be a closed environment such as a school, which might need full control of the served media as parents probably expect from them. This can be done with both implementations. There is no restriction in either implementation that would prevent anyone from running their ow...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

Probably you didn't notice, but my implementation also serves the media files I did notice. Your implementation also doesn't allow for HTTPS and HTTP2 pipelining, because you're effectively implementing the entire protocol stack yourself. You can probably make a web server do http2 in Java, but why...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

I find the choice of Java for something this simple just unwise. You don't make a hot air balloon with a steam engine. Note that the implementation I wrote more than a year ago has been proven to be stable and highly efficient, and it is the choice for at least a dozen Minetest servers already. You ...
