Re: The huge, untapped potential of skyblocks [long read+tl;
Minecraft’s items and mechanics is in itself an incredible strong convention that any modded game builds upon whereas Minetest Game can’t match that and thus mechanics aren’t as self-explanatory. They're not self-explanatory, just well-known. I think originality is the better approach as it gives e...

Re: The huge, untapped potential of skyblocks [long read+tl;
Nice writeup. As I've been out-of-the loop concerning minecraft since microsoft bought it and I can't get my copy to run anymore I didn't really know what the 'skyblock' stuff was about. Now I need to try out the minetest versions :-) Huh, that's interesting! I'm glad you found it informative. :) I...

Re: The huge, untapped potential of skyblocks [long read+tl;
Oh boy, I guess I'm contributing to the open source circlejerk myself in a way! That's kind of a rude way to say "I guess you guys have some valid points," but I'll take it anyway. ;') I mean it's more about me being self-aware about my contribution to the vibe and the community feel. Aro...

Re: The huge, untapped potential of skyblocks [long read+tl;
I found two skyblocks with a quick minetest forum search and they both looked pretty boring and not much different from the original skyblock map. Cornernote's skyblock looks about the same as that. That just leaves rnd's SkyBlock redo, which looks like it actually has some meat to it so I'll defini...

The huge, untapped potential of skyblocks [long read+tl;dr]
I've sorta been out of the loop of the Minetest community, as a huge Minecraft modpack project has sucked me into oblivion (and to be honest I was kinda getting tired of the open source circlejerk). But I was recently browsing the Feed the Beast sub-reddit and a random comment made me angry but then...

Re: List of Possible Replacements for Lua formspecs
Formspecs are one of the two things I've found that sucked most when I was modding minetest. There are no conventions. Any time a mod wants to draw an inventory formspec, they have to take into account the possibility that the player inventory may not be the default size. Any time a mod wants to dra...

Re: Why Minetest? What do we test?
Ideas for changing the name? Well, if you insist... Hmmm... MineTinker? "Tinker" has overlapping meaning and sound with "test", but has better connotations. To "tinker" is to play, to inspect, to change, to build... It's much less corporate, vague, and overused than, sa...

Re: How many subgames did you play?
For more than one hour? Three. Minetest Game - Pretty boring on its own. Mods help a little, but they tend to be poorly balanced and not synergize well. Worldgen is decent. I added the best mobs mod I could find, but it still isn't that great. The ambience mod was nice after I turned the sound likel...

Re: Big Thoughts, Dangerous Thoughts
IMO Minetest has really good bones; it just needs refinement. Minetest documentation is good. The engine is well-optimized. It just needs inconsistencies to be corrected, bugs to be fixed, and more fun things to do. I think I am good at using and combining well-known programming algorithms (like Dij...

Re: WOW Just WOW
Even back when the new Minecraft launcher was Windows-only, it wasn't like the Mac/Linux launcher suddenly vanished from existence. Besides, MultiMC is still a far superior Minecraft launcher and it's multi-platform. Java Minecraft itself is still the same as it's always been. Notch's revoked contin...

Re: Poll: Growing crops and/or saplings underground?
I'm surprised the 4th option got so much support. It's both impractical and unrealistic. Plantlife will grow too slowly so people will end up having to use mese lamps anyway if they actually want to farm efficiently, and yet it will still grow in places where you might not want it to grow and where...

Re: Thoughts about Minetest
I come to the conclusion, that the modding API lacks of lot of features. As I mentioned before in another thread a lot of good modders left the community because they can't realize their mods I want to make survival harder by adding heat and cold damage, but all I can do is checking if I walk on sn...

Re: Thoughts about Minetest
After much lurking, and seeing many frustrating threads like this complaining about Minetest's shortcomings, I've come to the conclusion that no amount of improvements to the modding API could possibly make Minetest better. There needs to be improvement on the content creation side: more people who ...

Re: Minetest wiki needs embeded youtube videos!
There is nothing wrong with including audiovisual content to enhance the learning experience, as long as there is a text-based version as well. MineYoshi, animated gifs and pngs consume significantly more bandwidth per frame than video files of the same resolution and quality; they aren't good at co...

I just played the latest version. There are some annoying things: The crafting UI within the player inventory looks like it's an armor inventory. Please add something to distinguish the fact that it's used for crafting. (Even the text "Crafting" should suffice) Enemies can hurt you without...

What a small world. I just saw your post yesterday while randomly visiting the OpenMP forum. :0
You ask so many questions on the Minetest forum, burli. I knew you were up to no good. >:D
(Disclaimer: I've never actually used OpenMP before.)

I'm talking about this metadata:Gael de Sailly wrote:I'm sorry but I've not completely understood. Do you mean storing the nodebox data in a special field in node metadata? I've already proposed it some months ago, it seems that this topic has been forgotten.

Re: Why the 32768 node limit?
What we need is a way to store additional data in nodes, for example unused bits of param2 could be used to select the texture inside a list. While selectable textures at runtime is a great idea, I was thinking more on the lines of a mod using the already-existing node metadata to store information...

Re: Why the 32768 node limit?
In a perfect world, there would be a way to dynamically render nodes, Registering entities may help you cut down on the number of nodes. 20000 nodes purely for decoration purposes is way too many. This signs mod uses entities to display text: https://github.com/PilzAdam/signs Perhaps a similar techn...

Re: The Ultimate Goal/Challenge in Minetest
An ultimate goal need not be a boss fight, but any sort of concrete goal that doesn't degenerate into building giant walls of inert material or repetitively grinding for hours is welcome by me. Upgrading your gear to explore a cave filled with poisonous gas, building a machine to produce fuel for an...

Re: Princess Rainbowface - For Girl Whose Brother Died
He only has to provide source code for the Minetest engine (if there are no core modifications, a link to the Minetest official git page would probably be sufficient). The only tricky bit is that the Minetest engine would have its own license attached to it which is separate from the subgame license...

We have block fall prevention with sneak here too, so I don't think that's what he's trying to say. assanetargoss try to say that what snowflake said means that the actually sneaking function is better! Re: Sneak LIKE IN MINECRAFT
In my personal opinion having a crouch/sneak is best (so you can go through 1 block hight tunnels) I really like the idea of being able to fit through 1 block tunnels and really hope that is implemented some day (in the long run, ideally alongside a generalized player/mob API like what Mircea Kitsu...

Friend, please: Javascript isn't a good "start point" because isn't in Minetest! Minetest mods are in LUA! Better start with that! Python is needed, but for mods isn't so useful. But if you are new start with phyton then learn lua! After all the Minetest mods API is very simple and unders...

Hello there. :) I am a current Minecraft/Minetest player and fangirl. The Minetest Modding Book is a great resource for modding in general: http://rubenwardy.com/minetest_modding_book/index.html Should you need more basic knowledge about coding, take the modding book's advice and take some of the fr...
