Yes its been a long time, project is.... Its not dead but its been on hold for a while due to school, work and the overall lack of public interest in the subgame and minetest in general. But not dead

Voxels are the future in games not meshes. Look at Second Life for example. Thy upgrade theirs game engine from meshes and prism to voxels with this new project called Samsar. Also destructible land , tree ...is possible only with voxels. No one said you cant have both, in the same game! :P
