Re: Removing Functions from Node/Item/Tool Def (?)
I recommend setting it to an empty function, function() end . If the function should return a value such as an itemstack, return the default value (often just nil ). Edit: Oh, I see the problem. The mere presence of a function for on_use causes punching to work differently. I don't think we have a d...

Re: How on Earth do you change your username for single player?
I know a lot of forums have rules against that but I don't clearly understand why that is exactly. If a topic still has relevance and people still have something to add to it what is the harm in resurrecting it? My understanding was that spammers would often hijack old topics to spread their spam a...

Re: Roller banner design needed for FOSDEM 2024
I strongly suggest to either replace the QR code with "www.minetest.net" or put this domain below the QR code. You have a pretty easy-to-memorize domain. Use it. Not having the main entry point to Minetest written anywhere is a cardinal sin. XD Believe it or not, some people can't use QR ...

Re: [Game] Shadow Forest [1.1.0]
I pretty quickly put off playing the jam version of this game because of the spawning, but it's much, much better now. For the forest and chasm levels (and I love the fog in that one!), the spawning is balanced and fun. The snow level has concerning amounts of the flying Shadows: since they're harde...

Re: 2023 Minetest GAME JAM (December 1st-21st) [$300] jam.minetest.net
(Not that I plan on participating in a kids' compo for less than a day's wages in prizes.) Huh. I was always under the impression that one would participate in a game jam simply for the fun of it. Many game jams don't even have prize money, and even the ones that do just provide it as an incentive ...

9 out of 9 for rebuild everything; that's a pretty overwhelming vote. That's also what I preferred, but I wanted to make sure that other modders didn't feel otherwise.

Poll: GUI API design
I have a question of opinion about the Lua API for the formspec replacement that I need to resolve before I can finalize the API and get back to implementing more of the GUI backend. Currently, any time you want to change anything in formspecs, you generally rebuild the entire GUI string from scratc...

"I'm going to play some Minetest" is perfectly fine. I mean some people are saying "I'm going to watch Youtube" instead of "I'm going to watch Youtube videos", or "I'm going to watch Netflix". This discussion is so ridiculous, just let people talk how they wa...

Re: Engine or Game?
Saying "I'm going to play some Minetest" is actually a ridiculous statement. Would you say "I'm going to play some Godot" or "I'm going to play some Steam"? No. You'd say "I'm going to play a game made with Godot" or "I'm going to play a game I found on S...

Are you kidding? This game was too fun to not get them all. Although, a few electrons in the Far Lands were tricky to find how to get to, and I confess I did a little wireframe cheating to find how to access them. Shame on me.

It's strictly limited to suggestions only, no discussions, so it seems to garner less joke suggestions. But yes, I think some of the suggestions there are fairly good.

Re: The best name instead of Minetest is...
I could be wrong, but I really don't think the core developers are using this thread and it's list as an important part of their decision making process. Actually, I read this thread quite a bit. But purely for enjoyment at the banter that goes on in it, and the occasional bad suggestions that are ...

Re: Why is Multicraft more popular than Minetest?
As a user not being already a Minetest user, would you rather download Game A or Game B ? Be honest. To be honest, neither. The first looks like a hyped-up game that's probably lame and will more than likely have in-game ads, and the second one looks like a lame game that also probably has in-game ...

Re: The best name instead of Minetest is...
Strange. You say it does the job after having noted twice that it is too close to MC so it generates a lot of confusion. Ah, I wasn't clear. I mean I have no problems with the name personally--I don't dislike it on purely aesthetic grounds, and it does the job as a name for us in the community who ...

Re: The best name instead of Minetest is...
The reason this topic was brought up in the first place is not "Minetest is a terrible name", but "Minetest is a name that people unfamiliar with it mistake for Minecraft". I can count on one hand the number of people unfamiliar with Minetest who didn't think I was talking about ...

Re: The best name instead of Minetest is...
The name Minetest is obsolete according to celeron55 and ruberwardy. So get used to the idea that it will be changed. Supporting Minetest as a name is absurd and foolhardy. Umm, no? If you read the IRC chat, they do not say that it is obsolete . Most of the core developers acknowledged that the nam...

Re: 360-degree signs
Must have been a typo in the original post; this couldn't have been a mod since Minetest didn't support mods at all at that point, and I'm certain I knew this at the time of posting. Should probably read "prerelease versions". To be further accurate, "pre-GitHub versions" would b...

Hey, this is really quite clever! Now I know how to get flowers if I want them. Although, I usually have the opposite problem of too many flowers due to building large buildings over a long period of time, and the flowers take over. (Nooo, not the dandelions! They're taking over!)

Re: 7 facts you didn't know about the Minetest Logo.
I don't see how these "lurkers" have anything to do with Minetest; I've never seen any mobs of them, and they certainly didn't exist around the time that the Minetest logo was created. I always thought it was an oerkki (although they have green eyes) or a dungeon master (which have black e...

I've reduced the value of my dedicated_server_step setting which, I think, should increase the frequency of globalstep execution. AFAIK, that setting is not used in singleplayer. There, the server steps are as fast as the client steps, 60 Hz. It is respected in singleplayer; for instance, you can m...
