There are items, which are burnable, like cobble and items, that can be used as fuel, like wood.
And the furnace just checks if a burnable item is in the one slot and a item for fuel in the other slot. And then the smelting process starts. That's basically all.

Minetest is open source, so ContentDB should only be 100% or almost 100% open source licenses. So it's more important that the license is open source than have variety of mods etc.? If the license of Minetest allows this or not GPL allows making money with the source code, yeah... But you need to publish the source code(Which is nearly 0% done in Google Play Store). Ohh, yeah, sure. Just want to show the system of dependencies. But overriding won't work then. Misleading example. So use optional dependencies here.

If you are using minetest.register_on_mods_loaded, your mod is only for minetest 5.0.0+. Won't run in 0.4.x then.
