Re: Cascaded shadow maps
I would like to test but I do believe it's worth it. Anything more maintainable is a huge win in my book.

Re: Jude Melton-Houghton (TurkeyMcMac / jwmhjwmh)
There is not a single human here today who can look back on Jude with anything other than the most pleasant of memories with conversations, ideas, and encounters. Jude was the most polite community member I have ever had the pleasure and honor of knowing in my close-to-five years here, always keepin...

I see an issue here, and that is to vote on the nominated subjects. How are these nominated subjects chosen? Will they be nominated by the public, or by a select group of your committee? For such an esteemed event, I would appreciate knowing if and how any biases in the initial nominations would be...

Re: Suspicious block of code in a mod pull request
Here's a trick you should use in any PR: if the code isn't readable, reject it. If it is questionable, reject it. Doesn't matter if it works. There is no reason anyone would write something this obfuscated for any function in a Minetest mod.

Re: [Play Now] JUANCHI SERVER
Look, runs, the reason that people weren't interested in your server is probably because there wasn't really much that made it unique, where people were willing to invest their time over other servers. I'm sorry that the turnout was so poor, I know how much work can go into these kinds of projects, ...

Re: Discord is official now?!
One would be almost thankful that they are not. There is hardly any conversation that would be worth bridging.freshreplicant wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 22:56But to my knowledge that's only a single channel, right? So discussions in the Discord's #general, #mods, etc. channels are not bridged with IRC or Matrix?

Re: Minetest Servers and GPUs
Actually you can rent out time on a "virtual GPU". that is shared with many other users in a datacenter environment. see: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2018/06/11/what-is-a-virtual-gpu/ . Eh, renting a GPU is impractical for applications like MT. I can also imagine it being more expensive...

Re: Minetest Servers and GPUs
Considering the wide range of hardware and operating systems Minetest supports, the only clear choice for a graphics API is OpenGL, which is what we use. Similarly, for heterogeneous computing APIs, to choose CUDA is to exclude all non-NVIDIA cards from using whatever you want to use CUDA to accele...

Re: Discord is official now?!
There is already an existing bridge in the Minetest IRC channels I believe, although to prevent spam I believe it is locked behind a role that requires a certain amount of experience.

Re: Minetest Servers and GPUs
Both Delta and ywwv are correct here. The Minetest server doesn't currently use the GPU, and getting a VPS with a GPU attached is usually a magnitude more expensive. You would need to justify the added cost in terms of hardware and development times with the performance improvement. It would intere...

Re: [12-12-21] JUANCHI SERVER
The CPU handles sequential operations very efficiently. It has a larger instruction set over a GPU. A GPU is slower when it comes to single thread performance, but excels in tasks where parallelization may be utilized over sequential operations due to GPUs running many threads. To give you a little ...

Re: Discord is official now?!
Jordach is 100% right, it is people like you who are the reason open source gets a bad rap. This thread has been incredibly toxic because you don't understand the beauty of personal choice. Think about survival of the fittest: If Discord is the best choice for most people, they would rather use it. ...

Re: [Server] Capture the Flag Server (Guns!)
Just a quick update following recent events: The server is not using the Freenode network, rather the Libera ( https://libera.chat/ ) network. It would be a good time to add it to your list of networks if you remain interested in viewing CTF from IRC. Adding Libera is very simple. These parameters w...

Re: Trying to implement Shadow Mapping
Heya, I wanted to provide some feedback so it may hopefully help you on your way with this addition to MT. 1, I really appreciate how it is sane to compile, just like you would compile normally with irrlichtmt. 2, Even with 8192^2 shadow maps, it only uses ~2gb of video memory, which for my case is ...

How about instead of insulting this entire community with this post, you do something to make MT better? Even you know it is open-source. The source code is at https://github.com/minetest/minetest I also think you forgot that we can't force the many great contributors of MT to just do free work. Aga...
