Re: [Mod] Dinosaurs in Minetest! [1.40] [paleotest]

Hi ElCeejo, I've been editing this mod to fit into my game. I've done some of the changes I was describing before. I've removed all the individiaul fossils and bones and made a single craft item called "unidentified fossil" and "prehistoric bone". the plan is to get the Fossil analyzer to output a r...

Re: [Mod] Dwarf Fortress style caverns [dfcaverns]

I expect it might have some effects on all mapgen since these supplementary mods seem to plug into that or override it in someways.

Re: Best CPU/IGP for MT client?

I host a remote server for players, I think an SSD is worth it. It seems to load map blocks faster from the world. Boots and reboots much faster too. I have a dedicated SSD for virtual machine servers. Then a separate HD for various backups that are made periodically. Just having an SSD vs an HD wil...

Re: Best CPU/IGP for MT client?

Doesn't the game check cached files on reconnect? Perhaps an SSD might have some relevance there with a remote host/client configuration. I would still fight you over recommending a hard drive disk over solid state disk for a personal computer running an OS though. disk drives are the bottle neck fo...

Re: minetest minimal vintage computers

I've had a player complain when I had music/soundtracks enabled that he/she was not able to connect on 32-bit systems due to RAM limitations. 32 bit (x86) can only address 4GB of memory I believe. I don't think my server used the full 4GB but their OS+APPS+MINETEST seemed to run out of CPU. The olde...

Re: [Mod] Dwarf Fortress style caverns [dfcaverns]

All the symptoms you listed are typical for a non-response server (engine) that is saturating CPU with mapgen processing. I run a server and a game and I consider this mod to be the most heavy weight part of that game. I run a i7-3632QM with hyperthreading turned on in my server and it still lags th...

Re: [Mod] Dwarf Fortress style caverns [dfcaverns]

It's likely not breaking the engine, but rather the new overgeneration features are causing your system to lag. I bet if you walk away for a long time and come back, your caverns will be generated and your game will be working. see: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?p=369320#p369320 and see: ...

Re: [MOD] Tool ranks [toolranks]

With the recent changes in the versions bosapara and I are using now, yes toolranks are unlimited. I would imagine that the skillful programmers who run Pandorabox (I use a few of their things, and they make nice things!) might have intentionally wanted to cap it out at level 100. It's common in som...

Re: [MOD] Tool ranks [toolranks]

That is a clever thing to consider in the design. I didn't realize that was accounted for already. However, I wanted to expand the sense of progression for some players. I was initially disappointed once when I was playing that I realized my tool wasn't leveling up anymore despite using it for a lon...

Re: [MOD] Tool ranks [toolranks]

return math.floor((75 + math.sqrt(625 + 100 * uses))/100) How the heck to factor by 100 uses instead of 150 uses per level. Can you explain the math here? Where do 75, 625 come from? What would this look like to generate +100xp(uses) per level? i've spent a couple hours playing around with this fun...

Re: [MOD] Tool ranks [toolranks]

YESS :) Thank you! I can study this now bosapara. I want to implement it or test it in my game. So I will look at this version closely. I need practice with loops. I spent last night making data tables for this. Mine are not as brutal as yours :) TOTAL XP LVL XP 1 100 100 2 300 200 3 600 300 4 1000 ...

Re: Best CPU/IGP for MT client?

I've been stable on Ryzen 2700U in a Dell Latitude 5495 for sometime now. Very happy with it and the iGPU performance. Unfortunately with Debian I haven't been abel to get it to start Xorg without using firmware-amd-graphics (non-free) firmware. So I don't know what the status of this is. But on Ker...

Re: [MOD] Tool ranks [toolranks]

This works well for 6 levels. But I've been thinking about doing a version that has 100 levels. I could write this in but I think it would be better to use a loop in this circumstance. I don't understand how to do that though. -- function table with uses and level of the tool. function toolranks.get...

Yep, I used this as a major part for a christmas modpack that used presents as the goodie bags and replaced the sound effect with a sleigh-bell jingle. It worked out very nicely. So, thanks.

Re: Minetest Merchandising?

I'd agree the Oekkri is one of the more familiar and reconziable Minetest characters. Frankly, there aren't very many good ones. Runs seems pretty good at creating cute things. Maybe sometime you can make some mob characters that are interesting in game and cute that could be a source of merchandisi...

Re: Minetest Merchandising?

I've recommended something like this before. It wasn't received well by some devs. Personally, I think funding the open-source development with some trading would be fine. It could fund infrastructure or development. But I don't think programmers are very good at the business side of things. I can s...

Re: [MOD] Void Chest [void_chest]

Thank you for the feedback and suggestions. The key suggestion is interesting (it could be neat to share the void chest). However, I'd prefer to keep it as simple as possible and currently, I think it is already in a finished state. For a brief time, it had animated particles but I felt those didn't...

Re: Best CPU/IGP for MT client?

I think you should take a look at some of the newer Intel ULV CPU's. The ones that are 10nm have improved intel iris integrated GPU's. Intel has pretty good support for LInux and open source. They should be low power. I still recommend a laptop with a good cooling solution (not too thin or too light...

Re: Best CPU/IGP for MT client?

Ryzen/Vega seem pretty good so far. I've been using it for about 48 hours now and once I updated to kernel 5.6.0 for Linux, I haven't had any more random crashes of amdgpu nor problems when resuming from idle states. I think firmware-amd-graphics might be required to use this GPU and its non-free. I...

Re: I started working on a soundtrack for Minetest!

I feel like thats a bit off topic. Sure you can store files locally, but its irrelevant. If you can download a game and run it locally, it doesn't matter where they are stored and the file size is less important anyways. For multiplayer servers, the media files will still need to be downloaded. Stre...
