If you really want a top-down approach for trees - how about adding a special axe that allows to dig tiny holes in the trunk and climb up using them? There's a mod somewhere on the forum that allows to do this with stone cliffs. Maybe you could allow all axes to act that way. If it's not the topmost...

Not exactly uniq (but then, which mod is) but nice textures and nice way of doing it. It's great that it makes use of technic and adds several steps so that the diamonds require some work by the player.

The mod doesn't seem to use hardware coloring. Switching to hardware coloring might be difficult for existing worlds but could reduce the amout of nodes registered significantly.

How about a 'seed' that players need to set somewhere, like a build-chest ? That's one possibility. The houses can be rather big... There should also be a way to remove that stuff, if it doesn't fit somehow. My handle_schematics mod is able to provide a build chest and a way to restore the landscap...
