There's now a function that allows you to get the *real* collision or selection or nodeboxes of nodes, as they are in the world, including rotation an all that:

This will simplify a lot of things on the Lua side.

I believe this is just an oddity (or maybe even bug?) of the Minetest terrain generator. I believe this happens because you generated this part in a snowy biome.
