Have you tried the minetestdevs/stable PPA?

There's also the minetestdevs/daily-builds PPA if you are feeling like it, but do note that it may be unstable.

Thank you orwell, but the file is in the /.minetest/textures directory (texture packs) (and it is a .png file). You can't do that. Mods (currently) run only on the server.
