Later commits in git have something to do with this bug. So you may try to build the latest source and test if the bug is fixed.

The fix is server-side, so if you play on the public server new client version won't help.

It doesn't help without logs. Run minetest from any terminal and try to do something, then check the log in the terminal. Also there shoud be debug.log somewhere. As far as i know in Creativity mode you can't collect anything, you can erase blocks, and you can put infinitely blocks from you inventor...

It is the common way of setting such a counter. Check other internet forums, the idea is always the same.
