I don't think pets are very useful in minetest . Please keep the game simple, to much complication is not good.

Voxels are the future in games not meshes. Look at Second Life for example. Thy upgrade

You said it will be a story but maybe is better to not be one and let the users to build their own story to choose what role play they want.

I was an Opensimulator user, and some things like glow materials I think will be cool for your mod or subgame. Something like that will be nice :
