got it working finally. I not only had to empty the hoppers, I had to actually remove the chests, hoppers, and furnace and replace them to get it working again. It only affected 3 of my contraptions strangely. The others were all still working just fine.

My hoppers are suddenly not working with my furnaces any more. They don't feed in input material from the top, or fuel from the side, or unload output material from the bottom.

To me, the thing that makes Minetest so wonderful is the depths and the heights! If you have some good mods to give interesting caves and undergound environments, mining becomes really exciting and fun!
