Re: Convert Minecraft maps to Minetest worlds

I found the problem with my edits of map_content.txt. It was a default setting for my KDE text writers. My text writers (Kate and Kwrite) both default to a soft tab, which I guess converts the white space from a tab to spaces. So now I have changed the setting and my edits work. yeah, it just dawne...

Re: Convert Minecraft maps to Minetest worlds

Thank you for the reply. I have been running ./mcimport.sh in terminal after changing directory into the mcimport-master directory. It is the same directory that the map_content.txt is located in. Can you try running it without modifications? If it's not seeing block 2:0 then there's really somethi...

Re: Convert Minecraft maps to Minetest worlds

Hi, I have been having trouble getting this to work on my computers. On the three maps I tried, I get empty worlds. I have one computer on Debian 10 with KDE, and it has minetest 5.1-dev, python3.7, and zenity installed. I even removed python 2.7 so there would be no conflicts. Since it wasn't work...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

I like where this discussion is going. Honestly, I give you credit for ignoring me and doing it anyway. There is really no better way to learn sometimes than to do something even though people told you it was unwise, and then making up your mind afterwards. And maybe, especially in this case, we're ...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

because you're effectively implementing the entire protocol stack yourself ...and I'm proud of that. This increases both educational value and performance. As bonus I do not require an additional file server. This is something I see inexperienced software developers do, and it's a terrible attitude...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

A use case I could see would be a closed environment such as a school, which might need full control of the served media as parents probably expect from them. This can be done with both implementations. There is no restriction in either implementation that would prevent anyone from running their ow...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

Probably you didn't notice, but my implementation also serves the media files I did notice. Your implementation also doesn't allow for HTTPS and HTTP2 pipelining, because you're effectively implementing the entire protocol stack yourself. You can probably make a web server do http2 in Java, but why...

Re: [Tool] Minetest Media Server Java Edition Early Alpha

I find the choice of Java for something this simple just unwise. You don't make a hot air balloon with a steam engine. Note that the implementation I wrote more than a year ago has been proven to be stable and highly efficient, and it is the choice for at least a dozen Minetest servers already. You ...

Re: [Forum maintenance] nginx-1.12.2 vs nginx-1.16.0

nginx has multiple stable branches. the server is currently on one of the stable branches. Just because it's not the latest stable branch, that doesn't mean that it is old, unmaintained or buggy. The CVE's you list don't appear to apply to the MT server, since it doesn't use HTTP/2 or the `mp4` dire...

Re: Public Remote Media Server Project

Did a little checking, and
Code: Select all
enable_remote_media_server
is only used in the *client* and not the server.

It defaults to
Code: Select all
true
already, so it can just be omitted. Therefore, the only thing you need to do for your server is to set the
Code: Select all
remote_media
option to the correct URL.

Re: Public Remote Media Server Project

You should use `https` instead. (The forum lost the edits I made several weeks ago that changed it to https).

All minetest clients that support libcurl support https/SSL. Libcurl is required for remote media support in the client.

Re: Minetest 5.0.0 should have been backward compatible

Endlessly expanding protocols and the code to support them all is extremely costly and prone to breakage. At some point everything will stop working because there isn't enough manpower to support it. Cutting off technical debt like that isn't pleasant but needed for projects like minetest to keep th...

Re: mods with 5.x - support - post it here!

It should be noted that there are still plenty of mods available here on the forums and on various git sites, that broke after earlier changes to the engine, and that remain unrepaired. What Paramat and me would like to stress is that it's much more productive to help fix those mods. You wrote 5 ni...

Does global mod configuration differ for flatpak builds? My local mods currently at location ~/.minetest/mods but none of them shown as installed from the game menu. Same thing with worlds. Re: How to know when objects methods are available ?

Pyrollo wrote:Thanks sofar, but the problem is, how do I know this kind of object will have the method before I instanciate it.

Don't. Keep the design of your mod entirely the same, and switch on demand to use the method if it exists, or some fallback code if it does not.

Re: Why does minetest store light in the nodes?

Minetest doesn't use hardware lighting. All lighting is calculated in software. In order not to have to recalculate light over and over again, it is stored in the map.

Re: How to know when objects methods are available ?

You can simply check if the method exists:

Code: Select all
-- Note: PERIOD here
if object.get_player_name then
    -- Note: COLON here
    return object:get_player_name()
end
