Re: Naming convention for library mods

Indeed, sorcerykid's work on this is impressive. I plan to use imagen to draw track maps for advtrains, and am thinking about porting some/all of advtrains' formspecs to ActiveFormspec. It's just that I lack time to do that currently... I am planning at some point to make a canvas formspec element;...

Re: Naming convention for library mods

I agree clearly. But I don't think we will have a better library handling in the near future, and until then we need to stick to the current solution. That's probably going to change in the next couple days when I release my Pluggable Helpers mod that provides automatic dependency management for he...

Re: Do you think Mapgen V6 is the comfiest of all mapgens?

I don't really build huge stuff in Minetest, but instead built tiny, self-sustaining villages. v6 is perfect because you don't have to explore much to find what you want. You can find a perfect little cozy spot and you just settle down. In the other mapgens, you have to explore to find the perfect a...

Re: Dinamically change text in formspecs?

No, it is impossible, no matter what mod you use. ActiveFormspecs probably makes it simpler to use (I haven't looked much, I prefer the raw stuff), but the engine limitation remains.

Re: New main menu design - feedback requested

So, why are there two different places for Content DB? I get that it makes sense to promote it, but having two different ones is liable to confuse players. Same with joining a server. I also personally don't like having the sidebar alone on the side. It feels out of place to have a background-less m...

Re: Naming convention for library mods

I personally like foobar_lib , which seems the most prevalent in the Minetest Forums besides ones without any lib at all. It makes sense, too. Would you say "the Signs library" or "the library of Signs"? Of course, another thing that merits discussion is the API namespace. For in...

Re: 413 Error "Entity Too Large"

The Minetest Forums has a file size limit of 1 MB. To compress the image, you could either crop it or convert it to a JPEG. Alternatively, you could upload your image to a different image platform like Imgur, but its best to place images directly on the forums if possible because they won't disappea...

Re: Vibrant Lighting

I think that we should add colored lighting, but there be a thing in the world file that states that there is colored lighting in that specific world, so Minetest will load the world with or without colored lighting depending on that world setting. If the Minetest world is loaded without color suppo...

It's probably possible client-side (using globalsteps), but it would be better in the server-side code where it would be relatively easy to code.

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

A fork would be a good thing because it would require a TON of time to separate the code, and that can't be feasibly done just on the engine. Look: I help work on the formspec code for Minetest, and to separate that, you would have to rewrite EVERYTHING. That's probably, in total, in the ten thousan...

Re: Creating a custom Pickaxe

Oh, don't worry about starting with the basics. I learned much of Lua and the Minetest API mostly through guess-and-check by looking at other people's code. So, if you want to learn something simple like blocks or items, just look in Minetest Game, which has plenty of code that you can copy.

Hmm, can you mark a position note as something that will show an HUD line with the title of the note when you approach within, say 10 blocks from the position? That would be useful to warn yourself about dangerous things, like lava. And I am so happy to see someone taking advantage of the new formsp...

Re: Are Diamond Pickaxes Required to Mine Anything?

It just makes mining really fast in survival, so that's the motivation. Steel picks are enough for anything and are relatively fast, but huge mining operations in survival should use diamond because it will take much longer otherwise. On the other hand, steel makes it harder to mess up because you h...

Well, you'll have a hard time keeping up with all the formspec changes. A few people are still pumping out formspec PRs (I have 4 PRs currently open, 2 merged, and I have plans for a few more) besides all the things other people are doing. And actually, colors can also be set on buttons using style ...

Re: Swords seem obsolete.

We had mobs a loooong time ago. But MTG is full of a lot of stuff that is useless within itself, but other mods use them, e.g. mobs mods make use of MTG's swords. Bit of trivia: In the old versions of Minetest with mobs, you could dig anything with your hand, including stone. So actually, all tools ...

Re: Other, Superior Open Source Game Engines Exist Now... :D

Quite a few people can code C++ (at least partially [including me]), but transitioning to another engine would be a HUGE undertaking. All Irrlicht APIs would have to be migrated to the other engine's APIs, and many parts of the code would have to be completely restructured. Many new bugs would appea...

There is the visual = "sprite" option in the entity definition. To have multiple textures per side, use the set_sprite method on the entity and set select_horiz_by_yawpitch to true. I don't remember how the rest of the arguments go.

The download is gone and removed because this mod had copyright issues, and I no longer have a local copy. It really isn't that worth it, anyway. If you want the alarm block (probably the best thing in this mod), you can extract it from this mod: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=16666

Old textareas can be made read-only be omitting the name, but you can't copy and paste from them (tested on 0.4.16). 5.0.0 read-only textareas can be copy and paste.
