In default Minetest Game the Mese crystals do not spawn above -512 and Mese blocks do not spawn above -2048. At -512 (or -2048 for the blocks) the density is super thin (i.e. extremely rare) and gets thicker the deeper you go. Wherever you got -64 from: this information is wrong and your source is ...

As I can see, it works by placing invisible nodes that emit light and then destroying them after 100 ms. Nice mod.
