Re: Tutorial for model use

All he needs to define his own node is: minetest.register_node('mymod:mynode', { description = 'Whatever', drawtype = 'mesh', mesh = 'mynode.obj', tiles = {name='mynode.png'} }) right? Yes, that's enough. Defining a node to use a mesh if fairly easy. He might be best off with a lua tutorial and/or ...

Re: Tutorial for model use

Blender is really hard to get into but once you kind of know your way around it it's really fun. To get started with Blender in general I suggest youtube videos. This one and its successors helped me a lot. There are also videos on the MinetestVideos channel that show mobs being made. There is also ...

Hey, I got this error on the version on the master branch. It seems to happen when I press E. Re: What is the better way to save pictures?

It should be noted that this is a really bad way to store image data -- it is essentially uncompressed data where the size of the image will be a 2nd order polynomial: y = x^2 . An image of 32 x 32 pixels will need 1024 MB (1 GB) and a 64 x 64 image will be need more than 4096 MB (4 GB) of storage/...

Re: What is the better way to save pictures?

I think you'd have to track all ways the item can vanish by overriding its functions in the item definition. Though as far as I'm aware there's no way to do this foolproof since other mods can add all kinds of ways for items to vanish. This is a tough problem, maybe you can find an alternative to bi...

Re: What is the better way to save pictures?

Item metadata gets sent to the client according to the minetest modding book. So since images get big quickly, using item metadata puts a bunch of unnecessary load on the connection. Better to use mod storage or maybe directly write to a file.

Re: [Game] Dungeontest (very WIP)

There shouldn't be any problems with linux. This game has not been updated in years though so it likely won't work well with MT 5.0.

Re: Lua: RAM difference, when defining function or not?

It could propably work if used correctly. But be aware that accessing a hard drive or even just a solid state is REALLY slow compared to accessing non-persistent memory. So just in time accessing will only really work if you make some kind of loading screen system. Using a more selective mod loading...

Re: Lua: RAM difference, when defining function or not?

The first example should save some memory since the function never becomes declared. According to the lua docs the garbage collector will free the memory once the function is no longer accessible from lua. So you could also set superComplex to nil after the function is no longer needed and propably ...

Re: Post your screenshots!

Yes, explosions convert nodes to other node according to registerable erosion tables. For example grass -> savanna grass -> dirt -> scorched dirt. Crumbly nodes are turned into falling node entities and all luaentities in the radius get a lift.

Gunpowder barrels from my minetest defense fork. The explosion on the right is confined by dirt nodes on all sides which makes its blast have much stronger effects.

Re: What Minetest *game* is missing over Meinkrampf (for noo

There is a way to install mods, games, etc. from Content DB in game, but it is not an obvious feature. Novices should be made more aware of this feature. There are literally "install" buttons... how much more obvious can it be made? 0_o Nothing is obvious. To find install buttons you need...

Re: What Minetest *game* is missing over Meinkrampf (for noo

Noobs don't usually visit the Forum and they don't even know there are other mods MTG has a communication problem. It calls itself a game but it's intended as a modding base. It sais that it's moddable in the content tab and on the downloads page of minetest.net but for a noob that information is e...

Re: New, less moddable minetest game?

Filling a big world with story is extremely hard. Stuff like multiplayer, the ability to destroy and build nodes everywhere and procedural generation make it even harder. I think constraining these features gets more necessary the more important and complex the story gets. I also thought of using re...

In my experience '} expected' in lua usually means there's a comma missing in a table. In this case it's after the on_place function.

but it didn't change gravity, that would be a big job in the engine. Isn't it already possible to change physics on a per-player basis? So in some way "simulating" gravity being the center of the world is already possible (except the controls being messed up when not on top of the cube), ...

Mobs were always added through mods, this is one of the most popular ones. Since mods are handled server side so I suppose you encountered them on a server back in the day. Some games also contain mobs.
