Good idea! Is there a reference sheet on config options? I'm unsure on how to do that, being new to modding minetest and all (not new to programming though :P).
There is a chat command to toggle it already - //hud :-)

Oh, sorry, I forgot that binaculars and maps are in the bleeding edge version only. Sounds like a 'mod package manager' (like npm is for Javascript) might be answer to that problem. Such a program could handle the installation of mods (and their dependencies!) automagically.

Yeah, I faced similar sorts of issues. Disabling the spawning of roots from the vines mod in particular solved the problem for me - the /profiler command was very helpful in tracking that one down. If you face performance issues when doing map generation, adding more emerge threads might help. It's ...
