it would be good to build an arena to fight players with players or with monsters

I like the idea.
At the moment it's not possible to do player vs player without turning it on for the whole world, which I don't want to do.
I'd like to be able to hold jousting tournaments.
It would be possible to make an arena for monster fights and Diamondgirl33 wants to make a horse racing track.
Let's find a good place to build it.

Latest News:

Grail Test now has two Assistant Wizards (Moderators) - Duke and ElishQa, who can help players get started and deal with most day-to-day stuff. The server is still a little bit unstable, partly due to its increased popularity - one solution may be simply to upgrade the server, so I'm going to start up a Patreon page or similar soon and do a bit of fundraising.

Unfortunately this has slowed down development of the magic and experience systems, so it is still not possible for players to earn magic priv and enchant items - I can only ask you all to be patient. For now there are some enchanted items hidden in the world, no clues so get exploring!

I could really do with some help on the coding side - if this interests you, please have a look at https://github.com/0-afflatus/grailtest/issues. Players can help here by posting bug reports and feature requests, don't be shy - it really is helpful and helps me to organise the work. I'm actually quite close to a stable release (which won't include magic and experience yet, see milestones) - having a couple more coders / testers on side would help push it out of the door.

concerning your question on IRC you might find this python script called map_unexplore by lag01 usefull.

OldCoder seems to have used similar scripts when he reactivated the Landrush server. He might not have published them though.

these methods delete map blocks(chunks) directly from the database and must be used very carefully. The way Minetest repopulates the now untouched blocks may differ from your expectations. Do keep a wide safety margin as mudflow or similar mapgen functions may change terrain near the borders of newly created map parts. Also keep in mind that it might not be advisable to delete air above created land as mapgen might create a mountain in midair if mapgen has been tweaked since you first generated the map.

Mods such as worldedge are pretty usefull to keep players within a certain terrain.

Accounts

I am enforcing the rule that every player must have a separate account, one per player.
Multiple accounts and account sharing is not permitted on the Grail Test server without specific permission from me. Permission may be given if you have a good reason.

If friends and other family members want to play from the same IP I will gladly extend permission, so long as I know what's going on. I do not need or want details that would identify you in real-life, but it is useful to me to know if other players on your IP are friends, younger brothers / sisters or even parents. All are welcome so long as I'm kept informed of the situation.

If I find out that accounts are being shared or you are pretending to be another player, the consequences range from loss of privs to outright banning, depending on the disruption caused. I know this is different from other servers and I will give responsible players a chance to sort it out. So if you have been sharing your account or plan to do so, please let me know immediately and we can almost certainly come to some arrangement.

Thank you for helping make sure the server carries on being a friendly happy place.

The server will be taking some downtime this week for some urgently needed maintenance. I'm also going to try and get the game ready for some kind of release - it's almost impossible to do coding while the server is running, partly due to how busy it has become. I also need to take some personal downtime because my brain is fried. It's been a pretty intense roller-coaster. The server will be back up this weekend if all goes to plan.

I'm really grateful to Duke and ElishQa, my assistant Wizards for helping to keep it all together and all the regular players for helping to test and build some really awesome stuff. I look forward to hanging out again in a few days.

Meanwhile, please do post any pics or thoughts and suggestions about how the server could be improved.

See you soon

The server is back up and running. :-)

The database is now almost half the size it was.
Happy St Patrick's day.

I'm timing the release of Grailtest 0.4.0 "Avalonia" to coincide with Minetest 0.4.14
Development of this branch is frozen, so I'm in process of squashing bugs and tidying up the docs.

Details on how you can help are here:

We will be celebrating April 1st on the Grail Test server.

Nothing that happens on that day will get saved, so it's all rites reversed.
For those of you who live in countries not affected by British cultural imperialism, it's a day of practical jokes, pranks, pink fish, tricks and other variously fun or annoying stuff. Everything will be back to normal on Saturday.

The day will feature a Grand Rainbow Spork Hunt with a completely pointless prize for the finder of said item.

See you spoon.
