Re: [Server] Just Test Tribute coming back online April 1!

As some of you may have noticed, I've been updating a lot of mods lately. And that is part of the reason for the server being offline for the past two months. After finishing work on the incremental backup script, I took a closer look at some of the mods that were in dire need of being fixed based on bug reports by Wuzzy, talamh, and others (such as beds, books, stairs, and itemframes). I realized that in order to best tackle some of those problems would require overhauling several core libraries of the Just Test Tribute game itself.

Of course, as soon as I started to change one library, that impacted others. All in all, I ended up revamping nearly 50% of the mods on the server, most of which were either separated or refactored. However, in the case of Doors Redux, Beds Redux, Books Redux, Protector Redux, ItemFrames II, and City Block II those ended up being rewritten almost entirely from scratch.

The good news is that I was able to clean up a LOT of redundant code (~10,000 lines have been added or changed), which had been on my to-do list for years. In the process, many long-awaited features have been added and bugs have been fixed. Best of all, I developed a new mod called Pipeline, which is a fully fledged in-game issue tracker. I'd been promising this for ages, and I think it will help to streamline overall server administration.

Image

It's now just matter of testing! My goal is to bring the server online Sunday, April 1 in testing mode. And no, that's not an April Fools Joke :P. I will be offering bounties as an extra incentive to find and report problems. Assuming that everything runs smoothly and any outstanding issues have been address, then full gameplay will be restored the following week.

I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

PS. And for anyone in suspense. yes I've FINALLY added the panels that iisu has been asking for since 2018 :D

socerykid wrote: Not only that but the results are quite impressive. Testing on an older map that is about 3.7 GB in size, the incremental backup took only about 26 seconds to complete. Yet the full backup took upwards of 2 minutes. So that is a four-fold reduction in processing time.
That's great! I was hoping for a very long time that such a feature would be added to MT. One way to do it could be to add the date of last change (perhaps that of creation as well) of a mapblock as a date field to the database. That would allow easier backups and restores of individual mapblocks. How did you do it?

Hello everyone! As most of you know, I will be bringing the server back online tomorrow in testing mode (yes I know, in the post above, I mistakenly claimed April 1 is Sunday). This will give me an opportunity to address any technical issues before the original map goes live again next week!

I will be also be offering a bounty to players that find and report problems. So be on the lookout for anything out of place. If you discover a legitimate bug, then you'll be awarded a trophy for the first report or a brand-spanking new JT2 Memorial Stone for each report thereafter.

Image

What's even cooler is that memorial stones now have magical healing properties. If you stand next to one, then your health or hunger will be restored in a matter of seconds. Pretty sweet, eh?

So there are a lot of opportunities to get some exclusive freebies and to help improve the JT2 server for everyone!

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow :)

Do website bugs count too?

When you look on the map, everything is kinda "out of place".

Bugs I found today (OK, some of them are old, but still!):

* Bones slab recipe collides with gravel recipe
* Name of bones slab and bones stair is swapped
* Wooden box craft recipe collides with barn interior door (HINT: Maybe there are even more broken recipes? Try QA-Block. It has a checker script to check if there are any broken recipes)
* Temperature display overlaps with hotbar and statbars
* Lighting lights up the sky but not the world (HINT: in MCL2 I managed to make nice-looking lightning by setting override_day_night_ratio to day during the lightning)
* Craftguide does not display recipes for stairs and slabs
* Craftguide closes if you type something into search bar and press enter
* mobs:pandoras_box is having unknown node texture
* When pointing to sign with lots of text, the infotext panel is cut-off
* (Not sure if its true anymore:) Craftguide does not display output count
* (Not sure if its true anymore:) You can't sell more than 1 tool at once in a vending machine. You CAN set a number higher than 1 in the vending machine, and the buyer will see it, but when something is bought, the buyer will be scammed and only gets 1 tool
* (Not sure if its true anymore:) On the old JT2, one of the steel doors had/has a missing texture when placed

Limitations:
* (Not sure if its true anymore:) You can't sell more than 99 units in a vending machine
* Can't burn wooden armor in furnace
* No listring support in armor menu

EDIT:
* Cant write sign text shorter than 5 characters (e.g. “Food”)

EDIT 2:
* wrong lighting for mobspawners (HINT: try this: paramtype="light")
* skin selector shows 4 pages but you can only advance to page 3

More bugs (?):
- Halloween costume is removed on rejoin
- Halloween costume's skin is not seen in player inventory or in /top
- Rightclicking a player shows 5 hearts instead of 10 (suggestion: maybe just remove the health display completely?)
- "/help e" does not display full syntax. The optional parameter is missing.

Also:
It seems there are running a lot of bots around lately. Just observe the area near spawn. They have a name like "Randomword123" and run and jump around randomly. They often get stuck in the water and drown. On the one hand it's great (free bones!), but on the other hand it gets annoying.

Idea: There are a couple of useful chat commands, but I think some of them should be replaced with items and nodes. Chat commands are always so technical.

/weather:
- Thermometer (tool, displays temperature only)
- Weather station (node, displays all weather info = same effect as /weather command when rightclicked)
/date:
- Calender (node, same effect as /date command when rightclicked)
/spawn:
- Wand of Returning (tool, same effect as /spawn command)
/near:
- Player Detector (tool, same effect as /near command)

Re: [Server] Just Test Tribute (Minetest S3 Engine)

One problem on the server is that many bones are littered with wooden garbage, especially tools and armor. Wooden tools and wooden armor items are especially annoying because they don't stack, therefore quickly fill your inventory. It's a common sight that players just dump wooden armor/tools on the ground in masses. I don't think the server likes that. ;-)
Wooden tools are usable as fuel, theoretically. I say “theoretically” because it's very impractical, only one tool fits into the fuel slot at a time. And wooden armor doesn't even burn in the furnace (yet).

I have thought a while on how to combat this problem. I first had the idea of a sawmill to create sawdust but I discarded the idea as impractical (you need to place a node). Eventually, I settled on simple crafting.

The idea is to use the crafting grid to turn tools and armor into STACKABLE wooden chunks, which are burnable in the furnace and maybe have some other uses.

The result is this mod:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=24533&p=370832

I'm not saying that JT2 should use this mod verbatim. Especially the pressed wood idea is highly experimental and I would not recommend it for JT2. But the part with the wooden chunks is directly born out of the frustration with wooden garbage in bones.
See this mod more as an example of what could be done instead of the One and Only Solution.

Oh, and independent of my suggestion, wooden armor and cactus armor should be burnable in the furnace, just saying. ;)

@up: Nice idea but how about just let the noobs keep their starter items when they die? That would make the game easier for new players.

I have played on this server for a long time now. Today, I tried to play again, but I got banned until the end of time for "Suspicious activity". I worked together with "jumali". She also got banned for the same reason. We mined many hours to get ~140 Protection Blocks. We haven't got an idea of what we did wrong and why we got banned forever. What is meaned by "Suspicious activity" ?

Bugs:
* Can't place trees, panels, slabs, stairs in item frames, pedestals and item showcases
* The various "panel" items have wrong description/tooltip, they often are called "slab"
* Can't build on slabs directly (you need sneak-place, which is annoying)
* /find command does nothing
* Many commands lack the command syntax definition (params argument in minetest.register_chatcommand): /find, /chat2, /c, /chat, /e, /near, /status, /where, /whois, /w and possibly others
* /xban_gui is extremely laggy. Why is this command available to unprivileged users anyway?
* Wind chill in /log command does not display any chart

Inconveniences:
* You can't return to the crafting grid directly: Open inventory with I, click on “Back”, click on the button to return to the crafting gr … OH WAIT, THERE IS NO BUTTON! XD
* Macro crafting has no “Back” button

Since this forum is turning into a thread of bugs and complaints lol, you can use the sneak ladder to go through blocks :)

Otherwise, the server runs great and the bunnies are fun to kill :P

Bug reports:

- Player can hear pages turn everywhere
- You can see the effect of lightning even deep underground

EDIT:

- (Many players are going to hate me for this:) Mese axe is faster and more durable than diamond axe, unlike other mese tools.
- Mobs can climb up perfectly vertical walls
- Mobs sometimes despawn in the middle of combat
- Problems with item descriptions/tooltips:
---- Descriptions of slabs, stairs and panels are ugly: “SlabWooden”, “PanelWooden”, “StairWooden”, “CornerWooden” etc.
---- All descriptions of Tree slabs/stairs/panels are having only "Wooden" in their name instead of the tree node name
---- Typos: “BlackBalloon”, “PinkBalloon”, etc. (no space)
---- Some panel descriptions are wrong: "Stone Block Slab", "Desert Stone Block Slab", "Sandstone Block Slab" while it should say “Panel” instead of “Slab”
- When you hover the "X items found." in the craftguide, you see a tooltip for the current recipe (e.g. if you selected Steel Sign, the tooltip is "Steel Sign")
- Inventory image issues:
--- Inventory image of Mansion Exterior Door looks very different from actual door
---- Pumpkin has that green thingie on all sides instead of only the top (looks weird)
- Safe has no footstep sound
- Straw bale makes wood sounds
- Sneak-clicking does not work for safe
- Many wooden items or plants don't burn in furnace: Wooden armor, wooden slabs/stairs/panels, tree slabs/stairs/panels, Wooden Hoe, Shrub, Weeds, Ivy, ...

EDIT 2:
- Wool slabs, wool panels and wool stairs make stone sounds
