Hello all, I just wanted to thank everyone for helping out with the forthcoming relaunch of Just Test Tribute. All of your bug reports have definitely kept me very busy these past weeks. In just the first 24 hours alone, over twelve trophies were awarded! A handful of players were also lucky enough to snatch up some cool memorial blocks. Congratulations to everyone for participating!

Image

Fortunately the majority of critical bugs were resolved in the first few days. But there are still a few lingering issues that need to be addressed: most notably the broken ore generation. That is one of the main reasons that I still haven't brough the main server back online. I want to fine tune the algorithm and regenerate all ores below -2000, so that mining explorations will be more rewarding for everyone.

JNEITRONS - For promptly reporting the issue: Puddles appear inside house
Master_CJ - For promptly reporting the issue: Screwdriver does not work
I also wanted to give a shout outs to erstazi and Master_CJ, whom gracially offered to come onboard as our newest moderators. Alongside the rest of our staff, I think they both have the experience and dedication to ensure that the Just Test Tribute server remains fun and enjoyable for our growing community of players!

Image

Incidentally, Master_CJ also constructed a very fitting memorial at spawn with dedications to several notable players from the original just test era. Although, the statue went through several phases of griefing at first, it's now properly protected. Definitely worth a visit on any sightseeing tour of the server :)

Image

Of course, I'm also impressed by the scale and scope of so many other builds that people have created in just the course of a few weeks! Check out this before and after aerial view of spawntown to see how much the server has grown already!

Image

The rapid pace of development is even more evident just by looking at these weekly satellite maps:

Image

Speaking of maps, I have fielded a lot of questions lately about what exactly will happen to this map as testing nears completion. While indeed, this server was originally intended as a test of the Just Test Tribute server, I think there is merit in preserving all of the creations that people have made thus. So you can all rest assured, this "temporary" server will indeed remain online indefinitely :)

Just a quick heads up, I've created another server topic specifically for the @test@ server. General discussion relating to both servers can continue here, but anything relating to testing should preferably go in the new topic so as not to clutter this one with bug reports.

It is my own personal fork of Minetest that includes various custom features. The source is not currently published anywhere.

I have recently created a calendar mod that might be useful for JT2. JT2 already has a very basic calendar, but this one has additional features such as a graphical calendar and holidays. The calendar could be useful to mark special holidays like New Year's Eve. I even added compability with 0.4.17. There's a related mod (calendar_node) that just adds a clickable calendar node.

viewtopic.php?t=25287

In fact, I created this mod only because of JT2, to be honest. :D Can you please have a look at it?
The mod is finished, I'm planning to release 1.0.0 soon (when nobody finds a bug).

I've worked on the teleport mod by lag01:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=25335&p=380476

The JT2 teleport has the following important bugs (which I fixed):
- 6th teleport button overlaps with inventory
- When you place or remove a teleport, the list of teleports in other teleports did not update

Feel free to take a look at it!

Issue -

Sent two people (Nemo and Master_CJ) each a book with text (which had no visible title once published, unless it was opened) in the mail (using the dropbox). The issue is Nemo's book went to Mister_CJ's mailbox, whose name appears 1 above Nemo's in the list, and the book for Master_CJ went to Liukiller's mailbox (which is also 1 name above in the list).

:D Hopefully the books will either be returned or sent to the correct recipient.

Merry Christmas!

Countdown to 2021!

Image

The fourth annual New Year's Eve party on Just Test Tribute takes place at Lag Memorial Plaza this Thursday, December 31 with fireworks, balloons, confetti, and more. As usual, there will be a countdown for our European players at 0000 UTC, and then another at midnight Eastern Time for our North American players.

I'll be handing out free party horns and confetti cannons, so when the midnight hour strikes, we can make a LOT of noise. But if you'd prefer to craft your own, here are the recipes:

Let's all wish a farewell (and good riddance) to 2020 and toast to bigger and better opportunities in the coming new year.

See you all tomorrow night!

HUGE thanks to each and every one of you for making our fourth annual NYE party one of the best to date!

We had an awesome turnout, including many regular players from both the old world and the new world joining in. With so many of us in quarantine these past several months, I think we were more than prepped for a new year and a new start!

Image

Image

Image

Afterwards, several players scaled the marquee at spawn for an aerial photoshoot.

Three cheers to why4, Liukiller, jtee, kumma__, iisu, kiki, DonkeyKong, Wuzzy, and Mikuden_ for making this party hype!

Image

Image

Yes, even MEGASTAFF made a surprise appearance. After all, it's not an official JT2 party without his certification of coolness. And talamh, you know, just happened to be nearby in time for a photo bomb. Ha!

Image

As a new year's bonus to all our players, I'm happy to report that the original map will remain live indefinitely. So enjoy!

Here's wishing all of you a safe and healthy 2021!

I've completely reworked protection at spawn, so the Secret Santa stations are now fully operational! It's first come first serve, as stocking space is limited. I'll go ahead and leave the Secret Santa stations active till mid-February. This way players can enjoy the convenience of holiday gift-giving for several more weeks. Have fun!

Just a quick heads up: Last week I fixed rotten eggs so they properly destroy all owned nodes in unprotected areas.

This was my original intention for how rotten eggs should function, of course. But evidently they only worked with locked chests and steel doors. Now they can be used with all of the following nodes:
  • Steel Door
  • Dungeon Interior Door
  • Dungeon Exterior Door
  • Steel Colonial Door
  • Steel Single-Lite Door
  • Steel Double-Lite Door
  • Fresh Bones
  • Locked Chest
  • Mailbox
  • Stocking
  • Vending Machine
  • Depositing Machine
  • Item Showcase
  • Item Portrait
  • Item Pedestal
  • Gold-Plated Item Pedestal
  • Steel-Plated Item Pedestal
  • Copper-Plated Item Pedestal
  • Bronze-Plated Item Pedestal
In all of these cases, except for doors obviously, the contents of the node will be dropped in addition to the node itself. As a public demonstration of this functionality, I offered to destroy a set of abandoned locked chests and vending machines in an unprotected area next to spawn this past weekend:

Image

Congrats to those players that were quick enough to grab what valuables they could. I think talamh made out with the gold tho :)

Re: [Server] Just Test Tribute (Minetest S3 Engine)

As mentioned in my last post, rotten eggs can be used to destroy owned nodes in unprotected areas. This of course can have fairly significant security implications for those players that may not have anticipated such a change in functionality.

Image

https://vimeo.com/503690142

Therefore, I wrote a script this past weekend to compile the locations of all owned nodes within 500 meters of spawn. These reports are made available to players so that they can ascertain the vulnerability of their locked chests, mailboxes, vending machine etc. and take corrective measures as needed.

I completed a major update to the Snowfall mod last week, including a variety of new features as well as a couple bug fixes. Here's a rundown of the key changes.
  • Dirt-with-grass now spreads to surrounding dirt slabs in the same way as for dirt blocks. Similarly, dirt-with-grass slabs will revert to dirt slabs when covered.
  • Dirt-with-grass transforms to dirt-with-dry grass under prolonged arid conditions, the likelihood of which depends on the humidity and the temperature.
  • Conversely, dirt-with-dry-grass transforms back to dirt-with-grass under less arid conditions, again with likelihood dependent on humidity and temperature.
  • Dirt-with-grass and dirt-with-dry-grass transform to dirt-with-snow during periods of snowfall, the likelihood of which depends on the intensity of precipitation.
  • Spreading of dirt-with-snow and dirt-with-dry-grass has been disabled since these conversions are more aptly the product of weather-related phenomena.
  • Windswept snow finally melts in shady areas and along the 60 meter border. The former algorithm was flawed, so these patches of snow lingered indefinitely.
  • Puddles will form sheets of ice if the temperature drops rapidly below freezing. However, unlike puddles, the sheets of ice can be removed by digging them.
Keep in mind, it is still possible to use seeding nodes on dirt blocks (i.e. grass or dry-grass) to initiate conversion to dirt-with-grass or dirt-with-dry grass. This is important if you are constructing a new lawn from scratch.v

Here are a couple screencaps from my earliest trials, while I was tweaking the algorithm.

How does this affect dirt-with-dry-grass and dirt-with-snow placed by users or initiated from a seeding node before the update?

There is no check for user placed nodes. However, all weather-related dirt transformations are restricted to the spawntown area (a range of 200 meters). So I feel that is a reasonable compromise, given the limited scope of the effect. Here's a map to more easily visualize the respective boundaries.

Image

At some point I might extend these boundaries, at which point I will check for user placed nodes to mitigate griefing.

Just a friendly reminder that all stairs recipes are now shown in the craft guide. I had hidden all but wood and trees during a refactor of the Stairs mod back in 2018. The problem was recently brought to my attention by several users, as the more obscure nodes such as corner stairs, inverted corner stairs, etc. proved to be a source of ongoing confusion.

Image

I worried that including so many redundant recipes would blow up the craft guide with an overwhelming number of pages, but it turned out to be more than reasonable. Hopefully this helps!

As the name suggest, this is a Just Test tribute server.
Just Test was an anarchy survival world set in an all stone world and so is JT2.
It has evolved over time and gotten more features. It's focused on exploration just like JT but it has more stuff to explore.

I've addressed a couple annoying audio issues recently. First and foremost, there was as a longstanding bug in the Fire mod which caused Flint-and-Steel sounds to be heard globally. Also, for some reason the idle sounds of kittens and zombies were encoded in stereo, so that is why they had non-positional playback. Both problems are solved.

Also, my apologies for the downtime yesterday. The server crashed due to a bug with lighting calculations in my mob spawning code. So I added some sanity checks, but in the process also reorganized the functions. That's why I didn't bring the server up right away.

As promised, I've published a variety of different statistics regarding frequency of nodes and items in world. They are all on display in the Great Hall of Castle Nemo. Right now the following stats are available:
  • Top 10 Players with Protectors
  • Top 10 Player with Expired Bones
  • Top 8 Items Contained in Chests
  • Top 8 Items Contained in Locked Chests
  • Top 8 Items Contained in Bones
  • Top 8 items Contained in Mailboxes
Since the script currently takes 8+ hours to analyze the entire map database, I will probably setup a cronjob to update these stats automatically once per month.

Re: [Server] Just Test Tribute (Minetest S3 Engine)

I deployed a new build of the S3 engine last night which fixes a couple of critical bugs.
  1. Some players with glitchy clients were being randomly teleported outside of the map boundaries, leading to server crashes. I'd implemented a temporary sanity check in Lua, but that is now handled fully by the engine.
  2. Inventories of idle players were not being routinely saved to the player files, even after being modified, potentially causing loss of valuable items. Now, as a safeguard, all player inventories are saved at server shutdown.
If you notice any further anomalies, please drop me a note so I can investigate.
