You can buy a raspberry pi 3 as server and host it at home. Maybe look at my work-in-progress guide:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=15732&p=237256. This is not as powerful as a real server, but it can be useful for a few players.

I think I can help you, but my server hosting is done on a
C.H.I.P. at my home (I could use any of my x86-based computers, but they may consume more power and possibly increase my family's electrical utlility fees), single-board computers much like the Raspberry Pi family, in that they also are ARM-based, but costing only $9, in a smaller size, and coming with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth plus 4 to 8GB if onboard NAND storage. I'm using an external hard drive to get more storage and faster disk performance. I'm already hosting one server, and another will be made by me; I will host up to 4 servers, and two of those slots are already taken. If you want me to host your server for you, send me all the files needed it, and I will set up the rest.

if you could buy a cloud-computing like digitalocean,complete setup os in it(linux is better),i believe somebody could help you by ssh.

the problem is to have a server means owner have to "mantain" a server,including minetestserver app& os.i hope Technory know how to do it.

I think I can handle this, because I can leave my C.H.I.P. computer computer on for much longer. The only sacrifice that will have to be made is the performance, since it runs off a mass-manufactured 32-bit ARM CPU.

I can help as well, but what kind of hardware you want for your server again? If you do accept my help, you will have to send me the server files so that I can set it up for you.

I learned some Lua from modifying some mods (I sent some of those changes upstream). You just tell how you want me to make the server. I can add whatever mods you want. If you don't have a world made that you want to send me, I'll create it for you.

I made the world for you now. I would like to know some additional details about what you want your server to become:
- Creative or survival mode?
- Enable damage?
- Custom seed number (it will affect how the map will be generated) or the generated number (6904124374032345603)?
- Additional mod(s) you want installed?
- A different port number (I will give you 28912, you can pick from 28912 to 28915)?
Any of these things can be changed anytime.
You will end up with a server on its defaults in survival mode with damage enabled unless you tell me how you want your server customized. Initial map generation may take a while to complete everywhere you go.
New players will begin in a large area of snow, so in order to be able to progress, you may have to walk for a while before you can find any trees or anything else that can provide with wood.

- A different port number (I will give you 28911, you can pick from 28911 to 28915)? 28911is good port
