The situation doesn't look good. We don't have any life signs from redcrab. From what I know expiry date of the server ends next Sunday, 15th September. After that date, the server will not be available and redcrab will have 42 days to pay the fee, if he doesn't pay we will lose all server files (world, protected areas, players informations, etc.).

Please correct me if I'm in mistake.

What we can do:
1.Do not panic.
2.Take a lot of photos, try to capture everything you can, try to capture everything you can. Maybe some day we could collect our best pictures in one big album.

If you have any ideas please post them below.
Information I got was DNS for suret expires that date. Also, as I said, DNS was updated some time ago. If you are talking about the amazon server itself, I do not know about it. If you really must contact redcrab, and if you have not try'd, you should call redcrab. Phone number I know may be too old but maybe it still works.
PS. It is my birthdate today! 9/8/2013

Right now, the server does not seem to be reachable. If it comes up again (it was down in the past for some hours and always came back up withhin less than a day), there may be a way to manually save part of the map.

The devs in #minetest-dev were very helpful. Sfan5 made a slightly modified client that can save downloaded chunks in leveldb format. That map can then be used like a regular map. Trouble is that it's not easy to assure that one has visited every map chunk that is relevant.

I think a good way of doing that is changing the range of which chunks are loaded in the minetest.conf. Even though it will lag, it is a good way of loading lots of chunks at the same time.

Will that really have an effect on how many chunks the server sends? If so, it might be a good idea - and probably someone with better graphics hardware than mine ought to be sent around saving.

I'm not sure, but it is worth a try.

IIRC thats a server side setting

Maybe it's possible to transfer server ownership to someone else who can continue it, just as a idea...

Redcrab's server deserves a fresh start.
10GB is alot for a map, if we want we can just save the most important parts of the world with WorldEdit, and start again.
Besides, the versions of mods on this server are very old, and need an update.

Maybe this is true. But at first we need to save everything as possible before it's too late... And then we can decide how to go on. To keep the server alive, I would even pay. I already did some research about who redcrab is an now I have to find the hoster...

I've looked into some hosting from my own web-hosting company. Dreamhost is offering hosting service for $15 a month. I'm already getting web-hosting through them for $9 a month. I'm just trying to justify doubling my price.

I added around twenty screenshots from various locations to the Dropbox galleries, just in case we don't come up with a solution. I'm going to visit Glue City and some other "forgotten" locations tomorrow to take some more.

We already have a (part) solution:
Use this client and it will save all fragments of the Map it receives to a Folder named localmap

I tried it out and it works quite good :) But some parts of the map regenerate, even if I set mg_name = singlenode

How did you manage to do that? I am sure that Erthome will appreciate this.

If you folks are able to do so, the recovered map data can be re-assembled into a new map and then I'd be happy to host it via my Survival server e.g. add it somewhere out past the current boundaries of my existing map.

A current image of what has been saved of the map so far can be found here. The image is over 7 MB in size so I do not want to show it here directly.

What can be saved: Buildings, towns, contents of chests, inscriptions of signs etc. Also the information who has protected which area is safe.

What cannot be saved: Player inventory, home position, travelnet structures (they save their data in a file on the server - so remember their positions!), the map as a whole.

The map is currently 134 MB large. That's only a fraction of the over 10 GB map Redcrab spoke of. What is missing is almost all of the area below surface (mining operations).

If you miss anything or want your chest-storage-area to be saved as well, please tell cactuz, AspireMint or me to visit the area shortly. If you know of any missing buildings, please alert us as well!

Could someone save my project at (-13000, x , -13000)? I don't even care if it's close to the center in the save file, it's the beginning of a what's meant to be a floating castle themed parkour course.

Also, thanks for grabbing Kilocity.

Done.

Yes

PS: Anyone know how to disable map generation in singleplayer?
