Hi Folks,
I read a lot about Minetest-Server installation , settings, backup and security,
but my interesting is about the hardware should be. Yeah, can be an old not actuall PC, but i guess server depends on:
- Internet Connection : throughput and 24/7
could be home as when IP changes do the backup ?
- CPU, i saw some discussion about that maybe less core high GHz CPU is better as minetest still does not use multicore ? still so what kind of CPU might be be better high GHz Pentium or more core like i3-4700 ?
- RAM how much, the more the better, i don't mind about 16 or 32 GB
- HDD sure, 500 should be enough ...
what I also did not find is some posting about:
- CPU and RAM using at empty server (ubuntu maybe)
- then at just running the minetest server, no players
- and the chance maybe after each 5 players in growth at CPU and RAM usage
might be nice to get some response for that.

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
The original Xanadu server had a Pentium D running at 2.8ghz (dual core) with 8gb ram and 120gb ssd and it ran pretty well for over 2 years :) so anything up and above that is a good spec... Also running Lubuntu helped a lot since it was a very lite Os that could be optimized easily...

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
mhh got a Raspberry Pi 3 running, with USB Stick main system.
Even with 5 Persons in local network, the cpu is under 20% and Mem still 400 from 1000 free (swap of).
Is some start for me ...

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
I'm in the same situation right now planning to set up a three servers system.
My prerequisites are x86 (preferably 64 bits), tiny form factor (mandatory), enough processing power to run three servers simultaneously (max. 15 users at best in total, one of them will be a local only server).
Any ideas for that? I already looked into the Lenovo and HP tiny PCs but I'm uncertain.

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
Internet: A couple of Mbps could work. The times of heavy usage is when players first log in or time out. Then the server sends data as fast as it can. This seems to be the cause of a lot of server lag. The server appears to pause while it is sending data to a player. Timeouts are the worst :/ You might want to set your Internet queues so that your other applications can get data streams in and out. Else the MineTest server will hog all of the bandwidth.
CPU: Dual-core should be fine. One for the server, one for everything else
HDD/SSD: SSD is much faster than a HDD. For Cash's World, I use a HDD with Redis. The MT server writes to Redis quickly (RAM-to-RAM). Redis only writes to the HDD every 20 minutes and can do so at its leisure without impacting the MT server. Requires twice as much RAM though.
RAM: This directly impacts how large a map you can have. 4 GB RAM should be fine for small areas.

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
The minimum I recommend for any MT server is a dual-core cpu, 4GB ram and an SSD unless the hard drives are in raid. While it will work with Hard Drives, you will start hitting drive seek time issues after about 20 players. I currently have Switchboard PVP running on 2 Hard Drives in raid 0 and even it gets pulled down from time to time during high traffic days with max_players = 100.
My servers specs: Intel Xeon E5-1620v2, 16GB DDR3 @1333, 2x HGST 7200.7rpm 2TB HDDs in Soft Raid 0.

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
My recommendation is not to use a hard drive or SSD. Just configure a tmpfs (or ramdisk if you're not on Linux) and mirror your existing world subdirectory. Perform daily backups of the world data with a cron job. You will need at least double the RAM for this to work effectively.

Re: Suggested Hardware for a dedicated Minetest Server
Thanks a lot - and sorry for late reply
as first I had to solute not getting any port-forwarding working, as my internet distributor had an 2nd nat between internet and me, so never some could reach my router anyway
I solved that problem a week ago, and started learning
Internet Connection:
* 50 MB Down / 20 MB up ... works full in Asia -- Europe about 10 down, 15 up
* to intern GB net
Testing Server: (running)
* raspberry Pi 3 (4 Core up 1.2 GHz, 1 MB Ram, 32 GB SD)
* debian stretch headless
Real Server
* I7-4770 3,4 GHz
* now only 4 GB Ram DDR3 1600
* with 120 GB SSD
this servers will only be for local users in Asia, mainly the friends nearby and from her school in Chiang Mai, Thailand
when so far getting it, with 16 GB Ram, think about better database and ram version, i know about
