I have 10s of people ask to be moderator a week - why should I trust you or choose you? Blindly choosing moderators is how you end up with servers being taken over.

If you want to be a moderator, you're unlikely to be chosen. Instead you need to consistently be a mature and helpful user on servers you play on, and you may be asked after a year or so

Some servers have rules against asking to be staff, so you might get banned for that
If I feel it then I do it (I don’t need a reason why)

Generally one doesn't blindly ask to become a staff member.

Admins are looking for valuable players, who show loyalty to a server and "get" the server they're moderating, generally asking to be a staff member on a server will disqualify you, but asking on the forums I would say is worse because it doesn't prove you have the traits most admins look for in potential staff.

Many players believe it's great to be an admin/moderator, but what they usually don't realise is that it's not just a bunch of extra privs and power; it's a responsibility and something that is to be worked hard at and earned over time. You cannot be a truly great moderator unless you know the server you are helping on. You need to understand its players, its rules and its goals, not to mention the commands and other technical aspects that are sometimes needed. And these all take time.

A good moderator is usually a good player first, and most experienced admins will want to pick their moderators from the players who have proven themselves on their server.

If you really do want to find a server to help out on, pick one and learn everything about it. Watch how the moderators interact with players. Don't ever step on their toes, but if someone needs help and they are busy, see what you can do. Maybe eventually tell the admin team you are willing to help out if they need any help. Remember: there's a big difference between "Is there anything I can do to help you?" and "I want to be an admin/I want a high rank/I want privs". Ask what you can give rather than what you can get.
