Is minetesthosting any good ?

Hello Everyone. I'd like your most objective advice.
I'm playing with my two sons since a few weeks on the free option of minetesthosting. Fun, but my sons miss things like rails,...
I'm currently thinking about changing to their small plan (5 bucks a month) to see if it's worth it. Truth is, I think the site is falling down.... No update since 4.14, not a great terrain generator....
Does anyone know about the situation or has any good advice for me ? I can't invest more than 5 $ per month, sadly.

You get what you pay for. Running servers isn't free - someone will always have to pay for the hardware and power costs.
Minetest Hosting is indeed very outdated and thus, misses new features, optimizations and bugfixes. If I were you I would look out for people who already host a server and try to ask them whether they would be interested in sharing/lending the server with you to host another (probably limited) world.

If the internet connection is fast enough just get a tiny, fan-less PC advertised as media center hardware, install Linux on it, and run the server at home using one of "dynamic DNS" service that is supported by your router and set up port forwarding.

Netcup is also hosting Linuxworks server, it works quite well, however, I'm paying like 7€ a month, which is more than your budget.
