This will make survival much more immersive. Great job!

Can particles slow down servers?

I could not cook using the right click. Should this work as an oven?

particles slow the server and the client AFAIK. but not a lot.

But I can not melt lumps to ingots although lumps have a cooking craft reciepe.
Is your mod preventing this somehow?

Okay.
Found this in init.lua:

if cookable and new_campfire_cooking then
        local eat_y = ItemStack(cooked.item:to_table().name):get_definition().on_use
        if string.find(minetest.serialize(eat_y), "do_item_eat")
and so on.
So the cooking of your campfire is restricted to eatable items.
Could you please make all cookable items cookable in your campfire mod?
And could you limt the inout of sticks to let's say 20?

Are you trying to taking the "New" right out of this mod?
I think the original intent was to be able to cook food with a campfire,
they were never supposed to be mini-furnaces.
Googol fixed that with this mod.

I think what to do with a campfire should be a desicion wich makes everyone by her / his own.
;-)
And I don't think that mods must be used as they are.

Well, I didn't mean to sound snarky.

This mod kinda fixed some game imbalances
with the way you add fuel and cook with it.
What you ask just seems like taking a step backwards.

It would probably be easier for you to take what you like from his mod
and add it to my outdated version.

I like how the cooking is going to happen in new_campfire and I like the thing with throwing sticks inside.
I just dont know how to make all cookable items cookable with this mod.
Maybe I should better say that I just want to have this function for my edit of this mod (a piece of code in a post) and not changing the mod that way for everyone.

I can not do this on my own, cause I am a beginner at coding.

But a limit for putting sticks into the fire would be good, makes it more realistic.
And the animation in the gif from googol just looks amazing, but thats just my opinion.

Nice mod! In Minetest 5.2.0, I've noticed a bug. I was feeding the fire raw food. I started with 17 raw. When I was done, I had 5 newly cooked foods in inventory, and 18 raw. It's not deleting the held inventory when placed on the fire, or something along those lines. It's even increasing them in your inventory by some means.

I have made a fork of this mod, which improves a few things (like now you have to put a grille over the fire, and your food will sit atop it while cooking, plus a few minor performance tweaks):

In my fork, more changes:

There were minor bugs in the drops so that digging a burnt-out campfire gives you cobble without a grille (if it had one). That's fixed.

You can now right click an empty fireplace with sticks (group) to refuel it. Reignite it with flint/steel like usual.

When a fire burns down, now it will turn into a pile of embers. You have 60 seconds to add more sticks, or the embers will degrade into ashes. When you add sticks to embers, the node will reignite into an active campfire after two seconds.

Although a fire with a grille will burn down into embers with a grille over them, you cannot cook using embers (think of them as being too cold).
