i was messing around with it a while back and thought i undid my changes but guess not. I just re-installed it and its all good. sorry :)

This is pretty awesome, do you think we could ever have a centralized server where players can upload skins?

No, thats wrong. You need this mod for that (see the first post to link to 0.4.4 compatible version).

This mod just doesn't want to work for me. Using 0.4.4 stable compiled run in place. Using updated mod for 3d textures with textures named properly. Tried mod under mods/minetest and games/minetest_game/mods and still always default 3d player textures.

This mod supposedly works for others so why isn't it for me? lol

So I take it nobody has any suggestions as to why this mod just doesn't work for me?

A couple of updates however, in the warp mod menu screen where it shows custom textures, the custom skin does show. However in game everyone has the default skin.

I would like to know if anyone has gotten the mod for 0.4.4 to work under Linux and if so if there was anything special they had to do. Not long ago I temporarily migrated the server from Linux to Windows and while on Windows the player_textures mod worked perfectly. While on Linux it refuses to work (all players have default skins). A side note, under the warp mod where it shows players skin, the 3d skins show. However in game everyone has default textures. Could this be a permissions issue?

My server is running on Ubuntu 12.04 and this mod seems to work fine

0.4.4 uses model's texture, so if you try to use this mod you would have both model's texture and the one this mod had loaded. At least It worket like so for me.

Suddenly this mod is not working for me anymore either. Possibly related to a recent update of the server or client, I'm not sure.

How do I get the skins to work in minetest?

The master branch now supports 3D models for 0.4.8 and later (also current 0.4.7-dev), see first post for updated download links.
