This map is extremely large. It measures 32km by 16km (512km2) and the elevation goes from -65 to +100. Due to the large size, I'm only offering this map through a torrent, since hosting this file would otherwise completely consume my bandwidth. Look below for the attachment torrent file to download. The download size is 3.3gb. Uncompressed, the map is almost 6gb,

I intend to update this map to address minor issues with the map going forward. Make sure you're using the latest version if you start a new world with this map.

As of now, I do not know if anyone is hosting a public world with this map. If this changes, I will update this post with locations of where you can go and visit this world without having to download the entire map yourself.

How did I make this map?

I didn't. I downloaded a copy of the MC map made by Lentebriesje. He used 1:1500 scale topo data of the earth and used worldpainter to decorate this map, and created an MC map out of it.

Then I converted and processed this map data to get a decorated map. I used tools like mcimport, mtmapprune, but also the MC client to do this. It took me several weeks to get the result. Some parts of the process take 4+ days of computing time.

All I can say sofar is...., WOW!

This is extremely awesome. And thank you very much for all the time you put into it.

It seems to me, that if others prefer, they would also be able to use mtmapprune , to further isolate specific regions of this map they want.

Again..., this is very impressive, and useful, and just overall a really nice offering.

I'm cleaning out my HDD and jumping in head first!

[edit] One small question. When you say " Make sure you're using the latest version if you start a new world with this map." are you referring to 0.4.16 stable or dev or..., the version of this map?
I just want to make sure I understand that statement correctly. Thank you

I will be posting the mtmapprune coordinates so you can do this easily - if you would like to suggest a specific region/mtmapprune coordinate set, just post in here and I'll include it in the OP.

The version of this map. The map is intended for 0.4.15+, and indeed it may not work with anything but 0.4.16, but that wouldn't be unfixable and you can probably easily load the map in 0.5-dev builds either.

maybe split the coords up by continents?
this should limit the sizes greatly, as well as providing users with a still decent sized map
The oceans add to the size greatly, as you have mentioned in the past so excluding most of that will make a big difference

I am interested in North America, personally.

What I'll do is post the exact mtmapprune command line, along with maybe an image showing you what the area covers so you get an idea what you end up with.

Posted coords for mtmapprune for North America. If you use these, make sure to increase the margins if you need some extra space around the region. I also would appreciate if you posted a minetestmapper image if you can, so I can see thre result and make adjustments if needed.

I have to remember how to use mapper :P but, will do.
haven't used it in like a year, and I used the Windows version with the GUI, which I ran on mono runtime, on a 32bit system, and now can't remember how to use it

I posted the coordinates for NY City. From there it takes all of a minute to walk to MD, just follow the coastline south.

It may be better to fly above and use a higher view setting.
Just so people are aware what the scale is, if I am in Massachusetts I am literally standing "on" Massachusetts.
Two or three steps in any direction, I am in another state.

So, this is why it is best to do a fly around with high view to become familiar with the map. The coastlines/coastal states are easy to figure out and then your geography skills need to kick in.

It's a wonderful map. sofar put a ton of time into this to share with everyone so do not forget to thank him. And it is not only sharing it with us, this adds a decent educational aspect to Minetest/Mintest Game as well.

No, that would make it unusable for many types of purposes.

This map is not proportional! :-/
Well, I guess It couldn't because the earth is a sphere.

I don't know what you're talking about. "the walls" is entirely ambiguous. Please don't make me guess.

I'll let you think about what a scale of 1:1500 means.

Pretty sure the former doesn't exist. Just a hollow promise by a mad candidate

FYI I did run a mtmapprune on the above map for the posted coords for North America. The end map is 726MB large and it took my box ~75 minutes to do the "cut". Depending on your system, it may be faster or slower, but prepare for a significant amount of time to do the "cut".

Use a bittorrent program to download the zip file.
And use an open source bittorrent client like Deluge or Transmission, for your own safety.
