Can I modify the ingame menu with mods?
There wouldn't be a problem with people who change it that you can't longer press back to menu or exit game
because they also can cause this problem by showing a formspec the whole time, which automatically closes the ingame menu formspec and so I could only leave the game this way when the lag came.

New build of Freeminer by Jojoa1997 for Windows. Consider testing this out if you can.

all we need to do is get the menu from freeminer and consider more changes to the c++

The changelog looks great but I didn't notice any speed increase at all (in singleplayer). Didn't try very hard though, maybe I need more config tweaks.
But if I run the game without mods it's alright so maybe I should first check which mod is written so inefficiently.

Sadly I can't convert from sqlite to redis:

Code: Select all

ERROR[main]: NodeResolver::resolveNodes():  Failed to resolve 'mapgen_ice'
*** Error in `./freeminerserver': double free or corruption (!prev): 0x00000000035ce200 ***
Aborted
What's great is that all the minetest mods I have are compatible with Freeminer, only one of them needed an additional if condition to prevent an error.

Already downloaded. I'm happy he is doing so. jojoa1997 and I both have school, so it is hard to do things like that.

Nope, it's Craig's build too.

;) I think it looks pretty good... Nicer for beginners I suppose.

Napodan recently decided to make 64-bit builds of Freeminer for Windows:

I made this post in the hopes that more people will consider testing his builds if they are mentioned in these forums.

I should hope so. If not, then you were a super-genius baby.

Happy Birthday. Also, it is nice that 0.4.10.3 is released.

A new stable build of Freeminer for Windows (0.4.10.4) was released today. You can find it on the home page of this game's website:
http://freeminer.org/

CraigyDavi also created a new server for this fork of Minetest today. You can find it in the game's master server list. Give Freeminer a chance, because the more people that test it and take part in its community, the more it can improve. Look how far Minetest went over the years.

OldCoder seems like another person that might be interested in making a new server for this fork of Minetest, since he likes to have unique worlds. Of course, he will have to bear in mind that Freeminer currently has a troublesome memory leak in it, as well as the fact that it is more demanding than Minetest is (less so than Minecraft, of course.)

I don't use freeminer instead of minetest yet.

Actually I've found Freeminer to have more lags (esp. when mining blocks) and slowness than MC—especially FM versions from recent months seem to have gotten progressively slower whenever I recompiled my git build. I like FM, but one needs a fairly beefy PC to play it, unlike MT/minetest_game and MC.

Could you prove this to be true to the developers of Freeminer? They can be spoken with on the #freeminer irc channel.

Like I said before, if Freeminer gained a community of its own, then its future might end up being brighter. A person by the name of donat-b recently became a new developer of that fork, but more people with the needed skills would be very helpful.

The following words came to be on the #freeminer irc channel today:

Code: Select all

<Inocudom> Someone else would have to do it then, but that would require Freeminer to have a community of its own, and following post presents a roadblock to that: https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?p=163139#p163139
<Inocudom> I think his experience would be smoother on a server, however. I am guessing that he played singleplayer.
<proller> now singleplayer needs tuning/fixing speed issues
<proller> and client too
<Inocudom> proller: Very true, and not to be taken lightly. Freeminer's future depends on it, because servers rely on it too. Luckily, you have donat-b and xyz.

Yes, it was in singleplayer. FM versions from March or April this year had a little lag that was not too bad, but the last version I installed (20140909.9c7ba81) was almost unplayably slow for me. FM also has this strange issue where all leaf nodes in a world momentarily disappear, then reappear again, especially right after world generation. Is that fixed now?

Maybe FM works better on a CPU with more threads, but mine only has two. MC 1.8 runs very nicely on it though. Framerates are similar to minetest_game with e.g. my Stampy world selection of mods like Mesecons. I think MC 1.8 has had quite a few performance optimizations e.g. threaded chunk loading, so perhaps that's why it has improved relative to FM.
