[Game] Builda City [0.3.2]

by Splizard » Post

I've always loved city building games but far too often I've been disappointed by yet
another release of a singleplayer city builder.

However, at the beginning of the month, I spotted the 2021 Game Jam and considering that
Minetest was a project that kickstarted my software development journey and is already
a highly capable engine with multiplayer support... well let's just say without further
ardue, I would like to announce:

Builda City, a multiplayer City Building game for the Minetest engine.

Image

The premise is simple, The Powers That Be have invested in a global energy infrastucture
but they need cities to sell their power to.. So it's your job to build a city and
distribute power so that you can make a living with your company-provided powercraft.

Quickstart:
  1. Find a road to build from, you can only build next to existing roads.
  2. Build a City
  3. Supply power to the city.
  4. Profit!
You can press the Minetest inventory key ingame for more information about how to play
and to see more information about your cities.

This is a new license that I believe is beneficial for shared-source games
you can do what you like with the project as long as you share changes and
respect the community titles/trademarks. Please refrain from discussing your
thoughts on the license here (this topic is about the game) and start a
discussion on the Github page. Thanks!

Checkout the Github page to find out more about the future direction of the project.
The mod has also been released on the Minetest ContentDB so you should be able
to install it from within Minetest 5.4+

Looks great, will try this out!

I like the concept of nodes representing things at reduced scale, this brings me ideas for my old project of mapgen based on real world data too
That could be extremely interesting to make transport networks effective, with vehicles. For rail network we could use a modified version of advtrains with reduced tracks and trains to match the scale of other objects. Much inspiration could come from OpenTTD for this.
Just realize how bored we would be if the world was perfect.

adv trains is very laggy and I'm not at all sure it has to be. maybe a reimplemenation would be better. I second the idea of using openttd for ideas

cool looking
Kenny's designs are nice as always.
Ok could hardly stop building.....
so where do we go from here?
so what do I miss?
parks, schools, shopping malls, administration buildings, canals, hospitals, fire stations etc .....
and of course someday all these buildings should have an effect on the well beeing of the nieghbourhood.
Might need police stations and playgrounds and sports places to keep the crime level lower and youths happy.
Oh and not to forget places of worship ...

I really loved playing Ceasar, the old "build a roman city" game. Always rebelling against the emporer of course so he would send troops I could defeat, that is if my own citizans didn't burn down my city in riots caused by my heavy taxes of course.

any plans of this going in that direction?

Yes that's definitely the vision here, I think all of these notable building types would be a great addition to the game and I do have some ideas on how to make them work within Minetest. The biggest challenge here is designing all the meshes for these building types in a similar style to the Kenny building pack (which is limited to the building types that are currently available in the game).

Moved this since it uses AGPLv3 on ContentDB and the Qlovatech license does not seem to be a ND-license. Please keep the license here consistent with the one on ContentDB.
