If there is one bug fix I want, it's how waving liquids don't appear when there is a node over them.
Anyways good update. :) Great job team.

Thank you very much for you and your team's work on the new release version of Minetest engine.

Have a good rest if there are only minor changes.

I am not the boss, but try to add the unittest if necessary.

oh my good, even as minetest is free and whatever,
5.6.1 mean only 5.6.0 was not really ready for a release and mistakes had not been found, with the need to offer a better fixed version of 5.6.0 = 5.6.1
= mean, you should wait until 5.7.0 is out and then get 5.6.1, as then I might be more sure about save from problems.
because if not, soon there is then another 5.6.2 upcomming ... so better stay at 5.5.0 ???

Patch releases are an important part of software development. It's better to release bug fixes early than wait 6 months for another release

Quite a few of the bug fixes in 5.6.1 fix bugs that were in 5.5.0. If you want stability, then maybe you should wait for the first patch release before updating to a new minor version, but staying on 5.5 doesn't make a whole lot of sense

Skipping 5.6.1 because it's a bugfix release which somehow means it's worse is some whacky clown logic.

It's obviously a good thing to make regular bugfix releases than waiting months for the bugfixes to go public. There is no rational reason to skip 5.6.1 if you're already on 5.6.0.

Patch releases are a GOOD thing, not a bad thing. And yes, as rubenwardy said, not every bugfix must be a bug from 5.6.0 exclusively.

Don't be afraid of patch releases, everyone. :D

No, I am not ... but I also will not trust another 5.7.0 until a 5.8.0 is there, or a needed 5.7.1 had been offered. haha
or a at now, I might have look on 5.6.1 (if my perfect running 5.5.0 might be show failing) when 5.7.0 is out as then I might be sure no 5.6.2 is needed.

Because as soon you point out like do not use outdated code ... and better use 5.6.1 then 5.5.0 then you yourself are not trusting your older code also. So think twice how you treat even your own older versions, just after offer4ed a new one. How that can go 'wrong' we just saw with 5.6.0 what needed a 5.6.1.

Since long time new does not automatic mean better !

Yes, but I wouldn't touch it until 5.7.0 is out, as then I am sure there will not be a 5.6.2

But, as an idea, I just counted the first sorted 26 server I can see on one page of the server-list.

engine version - amount server using - time running
5.7.0-dev - 3 - 2.52 days
5.6.1 - 5 - 2.09
5.6.0 - 3 - 0.28
5.5.1 - 3 - 1.45
5.5.0 - 2 - 6.6
5.4.1 - 2 - 10.5
5.4.0 - 2 - 5.93
5.3.0 - 0
5.2.0 - 1 - 0.18
...
0.4.x - 4 - 1.66

So as of this result I might consider to use 5.4.1 as if not conflict by mods, this server run longest without restart,
after that I would use 5.5.0 with 6.6 days avg no restart as of update, crash
also 5.4.0 is stable with near 6 days
all other version servers are not even able to keep running for 2.5 days (5.7.0-dev better than 5.6.1) !

Outstanding stable is the Bildungsnetzwerk with 5.7.0-dev and 50 days.
Sure, the more a server is used, the more crash might happen,
and the newer the engine is, the more often an update of a mod might be needed or available.

added later:
even list show still "Players: 192/1291 " I found it ranges just between 170 lowest, most Tuesdays to around 500 max.
That max 1291 I even don't see in the monitoring stats, there the max is 1.050 gamer.
hmmm

Oh my! My bullshit detector is exploding. You still spread the myth that by having patch releases, the minor releases must therefore be completely broken and dangerous. Frankly, you're spreading FUD here.
Have you even read the changelog? The bugs that 5.6.1 fixes are actually rather mundane and most (or all?) of them weren't regressions, but they were old bugs that have been fixed.

It's OK if you want to stick to old Minetest versions yourself but please don't spread irrational fear of patch releases.

Also, you can't conclude from short uptimes that it was due to crashes. Even if it was a crash, it could also be a faulty mod. But there is always the possibility of a regular shutdown. For example, the JT2 server restarts daily by design, so your analysis goes right into the toilet there.

Sorry for the rant, but my tolerance for bullshit is very low. :P

Sorry for the rant, but my tolerance for bullshit is very low. :P
And here came the proof, that even 5.6.0 was not that best solution, that always promoted, as before known bugs have not been solved there ... but telling take newest release, is the best ... ha
fixing even older bugs, maybe known even before 5.5.0 in a 5.6.1 then ...

Yes, my tolerance for bullshit got also low ... still stay at 5.5.0
But the fact of loosing more and more gamer is a fact. Max of 1291 is also OLD history, that is gone. mhh why ?

I am sure, I and more would appreciate 5.7.0 until 5.9.0 with NO any new gimmicks, but only solve bugs, before it might get worse again with 6.x ???

What you are asking for is not 5.7.0 but 5.5.2, 5.5.3, 5.5.4 and so on. The answer is you will have to do those yourself because despite complaining at every opportunity, you are not going to change the core devs' mind about anything. You can't have it both ways Festus. Either you must do the backporting yourself or spend the time to transition between each 5.x release. Stop complaining that the Minetest devs should do it for you, because it's been years now and obviously they won't.

This is literally what 5.6.1 is - 5.6.0 without any new gimmicks, just bug fixes. If a release only contains bug fixes, you increment the 3rd number. You only increment the 2nd number and set the 3rd to 0 when the release contains features

Also, the next minor version after 5.9.0 is likely to be 5.10.0. Each number in a version is a separate number, it's not a decimal

Oh yeah,
that 5.6.1 is same version as 5.6.0 but without bugs was so far clear ... but Wuzzy try now to explain that 5.6.1 are bug fix that even existed maybe already in 5.4.0 ...

So then better do some more bug fix 5.6.2. 5.6 3 until there is no bug left over ... getting a real stable engine.

I must say Festus1965 is right in this point. In the mirnor-versions i see nothing really new except a new problem. I think minetest should do a update where they fix really many bugs(100-200 issues at least). Soon i can play minetest32(a infinity-world-size-addition which was rejected by developers) and see no difference. And i think he know how versioning works.

Yes, obviously? It's a PATCH release, maining the only difference to 5.6.0 are PATCHES. Those patches are NOT ONLY patches for 5.6.0 regressions, but MAY ALSO AND WILL ALSO be patches for any other bugs that have been patched in the meantime.

If only it was this easy. I'm tired of people with virtually 0 involvement in engine development telling those who have been involved how it works or should work. Wuzzy is right here.
