Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
It's not good that URLs get destroyed when posting them, just because they weren't enclosed in URL tags …
It's not that they are “not clickable”, it's that they get completely destroyed.
I don't care if it can be “fixed” by using the [url] tag. That's more like a workaround, anyway. It's a critical bug if your posted text is deliberately destroyed. People are lazy and don't always use this tag. Also, I think many people don't realize their URLs get destroyed.
Previously, you could post URLs safely and they become blue clickable links that actually worked. So this is definitely a bug.

The URLs are not only destroyed in HTML rendering but are already stored destroyed in the database. So not only the output is useless but also the original when editing a post.Wuzzy wrote:I don't care if it can be “fixed” by using the [url] tag. That's more like a workaround, anyway. Also: Close and archive endless threads and do not start new ones. Those cause heavy database load whenever the forum is loaded or any of the pages of said threads are opened because all pages are fetched for in-thread search.Festus1965 wrote:maybe as of much more internet using, stop some useless parts:

Does anyone else experience 500 and 502 status with some regularity?

Had the same Problem and the website still seams to be very slow.
Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
Yes, I have these problems as well. They happened a lot during the last week.
So between the regular slow page loads and the rather rare normal functioning of the forums (not sure about the www subdomain), I got one of the following error messages:

And for me. It`s just so already annoying. Hopefully celeron55 will fix the hardware issues soon.thomasthespacefox wrote:Same has been happening for me.Nicu wrote:Yes, I have these problems as well. They happened a lot during the last week.

Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
Did some updating: the forum now runs on PHP 7 and is a way more recent version of phpBB.
Also, it turned out part of the massive slowdown was caused by a Chinese crawler bot doing absolutely silly amounts of random page loads. I blocked the entire IP range the crawler was using at the firewall level so that's fixed.
The forum theme is now a minimally modified version of a phpBB 3.2 theme, which means it finally works well on smaller displays.
There's one change that is kind of annoying: phpBB 3.2 doesn't support multiple multiple custom bbcodes that have the same name, and we had one: the "spoiler" and "spoiler=" bbcodes. I renamed "spoiler=" to "titledspoiler=", which aside from the name works exactly the same.

Thanks for the update!
Amazing how one rogue bot can bring down an entire website. :D Or was it actually multiple bots?

Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
It was making requests from about a thousand source IPs.
That's also why it didn't look like a crawler at first glance amidst normal traffic, but once I shut the forum down for maintenance it became very obvious as everybody else moved away from the forum, except for the crawler.

Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
I knew there was something going on that was causing absurd amounts of traffic ;)
glad to know that was resolved and hopefully won't happen again :)
also, do you guys use Cloudflare for DDoS protection??
that should help protect against this type of attack ;)
unless you guys have a ThreadRipper array with distributed networking across multiple ISPs and don't need CloudFlare XD

Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
The only thing I have and need is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisu
Cloudflare makes me sick with its big brother nature. The Internet isn't scary enough for me to warrant trading free speech for safety.

Heh, I share your disgust of CloudFlare very much. Yes, “big brother nature” nails it. It's scary how they are seemlingly everywhere in the WWW nowadays.
I'm glad to see there are still people active in the resistance. :D

As Markdown is a subset of HTML, it actually can! Just use <span style="color: red !important">red text</span>.sadly MD can't do this (colored text)
I also prefer Markdown, so I've written myself a script to convert my mod Readmes to BBCode: https://github.com/appgurueu/mt-content ... ter/bbc.js

Re: Forum is now hosted by celeron55 (report issues here)
sorry about the delay, apparently I was temp-banned for some sort of spam somewhere...
(I would like to know where, because I don't spam) >.>
and then had to reset my pass...
would someone please explain what's going on?? :/
was I hacked??
but without it, you're kinda stuck being the small guy left up to the big nodes sniping your server...
basically it's the same as a 64-core EPYC making numerous requests across 6*4 ethernet lines all connected to a measly 32bit Pentium4
or in Layman's terms, you don't stand a chance :(
...but I guess that's exactly what Sisu is... heh
...well, good luck :)
I'm not aware of any free speech infringements though >.>
and in most cases, those against free speech don't offer safety... <_<
which means I wouldn't be recommending them if I knew they did. ;)
also, I'd help fund you in crypto for a network array that can replace cloudflare :)
(but honestly, I'm trying to save that up for my own array... lol) :P
I'm still a noob when it comes to the setup though as I'm learning myself
though I just recently found out Surricata is a good FOSS Linux HIPS which can block DDoSing IPs automatically if you configure it :)
oh and btw, I'm just as much for freedom (free speech, etc) as I am for security
those who would sacrifice either deserve neither ;)

yeah I feel ya there, and I'm all for abolishing it (IPFS instead of DoH) :)celeron55 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 15:16The only thing I have and need is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sisu

Finally the forum is working again :-) Thank you.
Would it be possible to allow users to choose the default phpbb theme? Its friendlier to the eyes, and the profiles are on the right 😁 side.
