by rubenwardy » Post

Hi all!

The Minetest 5.4.0 feature freeze has begun, which means we'd be very grateful for help testing the prerelease version. We're now expecting this to take place on the 13th at the earliest

Please go crazy, and break all the things!

Highlights

  • Improved input binding, allows changing mouse bindings.
  • Added support for showing attached objects whilst in first person mode (Jordach)
  • ContentDB: Added dependency resolution, update all, and download queues.
  • Loads of formspec improvements, including 3d models, more styling, and optimisations.
  • Loads of bug fixes including several security patches.
Changelog: https://dev.minetest.net/Changelog#5.3. ... 6.92_5.4.0

Known issues

  • minetest.get_player_information crashes
  • Windows may have problems installing from ContentDB
  • Issues with inventory list styling
  • list rings reports the wrong number of items to callbacks
Please report any issues on GitHub or the Forums

@ darcksama

This link you posted is posted in the original post, and that has the PPA URLs for Ubuntu deb packages. What do you miss?

now way !
Yes, a lot of work put in,
end when I see how much servers are even 5.3.0 are just about 50 (incl. 5.4.-dev)
see them to the majority and most famous servers.
You must be strong in your mind to keep up with updating, upgrading
I keep 5.2.0 as 5.3.0 and sure further is not compatible anymore with the builds my gamer made.

@goats when I use the command sudo add-apt-repository ppa:minetestdevs/daily-builds
sudo apt-get update , it only updates to minetest again and does not install minetest 5.4, and when I look at the deb version below, it only goes up to version 5.3, you could make 5.4 available in deb as it is easier for lay users =P

the mesh drawing doesn't seems to be good.
using win10 64
some meshes behaves strangely, also some attached objects is glitching using visual = "wielditem"
can it be something with the animation?

well I was surprised when bears begun to walk backwards, or just now, a stonemonster standning on its hands and looking at me...

@ darcksama
This should be daily builds, which have not been in 5.3 branch for ages, so something is wrong with the repo, your command is wrong, or you are looking in the wrong place for the newly-installed version (if that is a possible thing).
when I use the command sudo add-apt-repository ppa:minetestdevs/daily-builds
sudo apt-get update
did you add the correct PPA first?
http://ppa.launchpad.net/minetestdevs/daily-builds/ubuntu your version of ubuntu
e.g.,

Code: Select all

http://ppa.launchpad.net/minetestdevs/daily-builds/ubuntu focal main

What does the terminal output say is happening?

Failing any of this, use an appimage. https://gitlab.com/minetest/minetest/-/pipelines . For this exact one, look for commit d1ec5117, currently 4th down the list.

@goats: The PPA is fine, it just doesn't have 5.4.0 - that's the problem. There's a fresh rebuild of 5.3.0, but that doesn't trigger an update through the OS' update manager, considering it's labeled as the same version.

It looks like the daily build PPA incorrectly labels 5.4.0-dev as 5.3.0. We likely haven't updated the script since the version scheme change

This version often¹ quits when "Play Game" is clicked - something I don't recall seeing before.

One way to reproduce it is to add a lua error (e.g. a syntax error) in a mod, the first time you click "Play Game" the game will fail gracefully as expected presenting an error dialog and lua stack trace, but now the next time you try to play the game Minetest will quit.

Before running RC1 I was running 3fb1f45, which is 10th Sept 2020. I didn't see this issue in that version. Both are the Win64 build.

I don't have much useful information yet, nothing appears in debug.txt and the Windows event log just gives:

Code: Select all

Faulting application name: minetest.exe, version: 5.4.0.0, time stamp: 0x6015c6fe
Faulting module name: libstdc++-6.dll, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0x40000015
Fault offset: 0x000000000002072a
...
0x40000015 is STATUS_FATAL_APP_EXIT, which isn't very helpful, but sounds like abort() is one of the ways that can happen

The last two lines in the debug.txt are

Code: Select all

2021-02-02 23:59:53: INFO[Main]: EmergeManager: using 1 threads
2021-02-02 23:59:53: INFO[Main]: BanManager: loading from D:\Program Files (writeable)\minetest-5 latest\bin\..\worlds\nethertest dummy seed1\ipban.txt

¹ yeah yea, people who don't code poorly won't experience this :)

Is it possible to update Portuguese translations at this point in the release cicle? I would like to provide translations to some of the new features, like the new ContentDB ones.

@ronoaldo: Yes.
Just go to <https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/minetest/minetest/>.
Minetest is ready to be translated, just read the instructions.

You can also translate Minetest Game, but it's not quite ready yet (the templates still needs updating, which hopefully happens soon).

See <https://dev.minetest.net/Translating> for the full manual on Minetest translation.

im excited. but I want to know when support for multiple mouses is going to be added. this is for a mod that I am working on. the API for the mouse state could be an array for which left mouse button I clicked.

just a small bug, When I install a mod that has the dependency on farming (Farming Redo), it confuses it with farming (from the Minetest Game), but if I choose, that I will play with Development Test, it downloads farming (Farming Redo), correctly, It could be fixed by making an exception with farming, and others that use the same name as one of the Minetest Game (such as bucket), or simply choose Development Test by default, so that new players do not have problems, since many mods use Farming Redo (farming).

i use translate

minetest.get_player_information crashes
This isn't what a working version looks like. Several important minetest mods also use this function, so *please* fix this before release.

That's already been fixed. It did also happen only under specific circumstances

The issues in known issues are all the things that are blocking the release. We list them to avoid double reports not because we don't intend to fix them before releasing

I think I found a bug with the entity nametag:

This is what it looked like in Minetest5.3
transparent and clear, not having effect on what is behind the tag:
Image

This is what it looks like in minetest 5.4
Now suddenly it has some strange background, not being clear
and transparent anymore:
