Minetest 5.6.0 release candidate

by rubenwardy » Post

Hi all!

The Minetest 5.6.0 feature freeze has begun, which means we'd be very grateful for help testing the prerelease version. We're expecting the release to take place on the 31st at the earliest

Please go crazy, and break all the things!

Highlights

  • Dynamic shadows
  • New UI for server login and registration
  • Dependency information added to Select Mods dialog
  • Fixed transparency sorting - looking at transparent things through transparent things should no longer bug
  • New animated particle spawner API
  • Support for 9-slice images and animated images (previously only backgrounds and buttons supported 9-slice)
  • API for mods to run code in another thread (Asynchronous Worker)
  • Ability to hide debug HUD (position, etc) using a HUD flag
Changelog: https://dev.minetest.net/Changelog#5.5. ... 6.92_5.6.0

Known issues

  • Autoforward no longer allows sideways movement
  • Devtest error texture on dirt
Please report any issues on GitHub or the forums

The depth sorting bugfix is a HUGE improvement and has fixed the oldest known bug in Minetest 5.5.1 (it was a VERY old bug). Before this update, semi-transparency of nodes was pretty broken, causing some blocks to just become completely invisible when behind other semitransparent blocks when viewed from certain camera angles. This was a very big problem if you had stuff like semitransparent colored glass in your world, or lots of semitransparent laser beams, or any other block with semi-transparency.

There is a limitation to this, however: This only works up to a certain distance, which is set to 16 by default. Beyond this distance, depth sorting won't work again. If you have a more powerful computer, consider increasing the setting transparency_sorting_distance.

Another (small) highlight (by me :P): Chat command tilde notation. In commands like /teleport and /time and other commands that accept numbers, you can use the tilde for relative values.

"~" means "the current value", "~1", means "the current value plus 1" and "~-1" means "the current value minus 1".

For example, "/time ~2000" or "/time ~2:00 adds 2 hours to the time. And "/teleport ~ ~-10 ~" teleports you 10 blocks downwards.

For now, /deleteblocks, /emergeblocks, /fixlight, /spawnentity, /teleport and /time accept tilde notation.

That is Great news, You should become a developer haha ;)

This will help out all of us desperately looking for (These) commands, in particular

and it is pretty DEEP, maybe just enough so already, as far as needing to see through, but hopefully it won't break our files, if we already started building a lot of potent glass pieces

files like This usually won't break a Game anyway

excellent work

Today is probably the last day you can test and report issues for 5.6.0.
Here are two fresh Windows builds from the Gitlab pipeline:
Mods: Mesecons | WorldEdit | Nuke & Minetest builds for Windows (32-bit & 64-bit)

That comes as a surprise because in Rubenwardy's OP, the "Download" section is still TBD. I thought there was some kind of delay.

Yeah I did wonder also, break all the things, then no builds to break, seems more than a week has gone to waste :|

Hmmm... I see the shadow settings but no shadow in-game no matter what I do (including scrapping my minetest.conf that might have been tainted by 5.5's short-lived RC that had shadows). I note that sfan5 says "Gitlab" but the links point to Github. Just a word slip?
