Old Mapgen Emulation

by Walker » Sun Jan 12, 2020 13:54

A question to the Devs ...

Can someone provide "map_meta.txt" that (as close as possible) emulate the old mapgens (I personally like the mapgens from Minetest 0.2.2 and 0.3.1)?

There are legacy Minetest versions on Github if that's what you need: https://github.com/minetest/minetest/releases/.
Happy new Year 2020: let's all aim finally for a clear vision of what we want to make of Minetest!

Well, Mapgen v5 is the one you're looking for. The caves will be different, but terrain generation should be approximately the same, with only slight differences. Of course, there are many more biomes built in now, so that won't be the same.

thanks, that's what I was looking for, I just thought that v5 had already been veined a lot, since it will be further developed ... but if the terrain design is (almost) the same, I'm still happy ^^

Mapgen V5 has identical surface terrain to MT 0.2/0.3, but the caves are different. It uses the same cave generation as most of the other mapgens.

The tunnel generation used in most MT mapgens is actually derived from MT 0.2/0.3 cave generation. So to get as close as possible to MT 0.2/0.3 mapgen disable the 'caverns' and the 'large caves', leaving just the tunnels. In .conf:

mgv5_spflags = nocaverns
mgv5_large_cave_depth = -31000

minetest-c55 3.1:Image
minetest 0.5.17.1:Image
seed:6711337106368366063

not the same, even with the same seed; (

but for me the terrain is close enough to the original ^^

Ha =) Not surprising, there may be many reasons why.
I am fairly sure old MT used a different implementation of 3D noise (which was far slower than the modern implementation), so the structure of 3D noise resultng from a particular seed has probably changed.
However, the general character should be similar, or at least, as similar as it can be.
