Newcomer: some info

by PatrocloPicchiaduro » Post

Hi,
first of all, let me express my congratulations for the game, it's marvellous.

Secondly, I would like to ask some informations that as newbie have bugged me. I thank you all in advance for the kindness of replying me.

1. When I started a new game with 'creative mode' disabled, I've found out that crafting a torch or a pickaxe were not easy things at all. I've explored a wide area, somewhat, where I found beach sand blocks, desert sand blocks, wood, apples, dirt, and leaves. But I could not find a way to craft the pickaxe with the materials I got. The wiki says that wooden planks should work, but alas I think I've tried that with no success. I will give it another attempt later on to confirm.

2. I happened t craft a normal chest, well actually a couple of them, however I've soon found out that I can't seem to be able to destroy them to put them back in my inventory and place them somewhere else. Is there any kind of trick for that?

Welcome!

For 1: which recipe did you use? Can you take a screenshot of the crafting grid? To create a pickaxe, punch some trees, turn the trees to planks, and a few planks to sticks. You need three planks in top row, and 2 sticks, one in the middle of each of the other rows (like forming a 'T').

For 2: are you sure the chest is empty? Chests with at least one item cannot be dug until you empty them. It may also be a bit of lag (yes, it does happen rarely on single player too). On a very unlikely scenario, it may be some kind of "protection" system malfunctioning, but I seriously doubt it.

Again, welcome to the community!

Thank you for this speedy reply! :)

1. Yeah maybe I was just mistaken, I'll try later and let you know
EDIT: yeah, I was. :-)

2: I'm sure it's not empty, I just assumed I could put a non-empty chest into the inventory 'cause I just played Terasology some minutes before and there I could do it. Nice to know, thanks!

I have another question for you!

If I make my mine explode with TNT, is there any chance the materials are going into my inventory?

Most TNT mods have this disabled as it cause massive lag to drop the materials. None of them, that I know of, allow the materials to go into the detonators inventory.

That is, everything blows up is gonna be lost?

That really undermines the utility of the TNT, I thought it was used for easy mining.

If I happen to drop items on the floor, how much time does it pass before they disappear?

It will be there forever.

Thank you :)

and thank you all for welcoming into this forum.

I started a new server after adding several mods to make the gameplay more challenging and interesting, and I think I'll stay here for a while.

cheers all!

There is a mod called item_drop that allows the player to walk over items and pick them up as they move. Google item_drop minetest mod. It should be created by a user named PilzAdam.

You might want to try out some tools from RealBadAngel's technic:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2538

or Krock's autominer:
viewtopic.php?id=8095#p123004

or aldobr's tunnel boring machine (tbm) (NB: read all the posts to find the download and to be aware of the 2 possible bugs):
viewtopic.php?id=4015#p55840

or LocaL_ALchemisT's workers:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2576#p34085

There might be more mods like those.

Hi :) Thank you for the links!

At the time I made my first post I was running without mods, right now I've got 16 of them, technic is one of those. I didn't check if things changed with TNT because I can't seem to find the ingredients for it. - YET.

Also, I had to disable 'damage' from not eating food (I'm not using survival mod as well), because for some reason my wheat does not grow.. I planted my stuff in the middle of a lake in which I accumulated terrain, 'cause at the beginning I was short of cups to hold and bring around water. Although there is plenty of light, nothing seems to grow for now, except for a very low grass. When I put down the seeds sometimes they immediately disappear, sometimes they don't, sometimes it looks like it didn't accept the seed at all. Maybe I've got to be faster in this :-)

Anyway, these are my mods right now:
3dforniture
animals
bridgetool
carts
cottages
craftingpack (DISABLED, items showing up in inventory do not show when melting)
desert_uses
farming_plus
helicopter
home_positions
hud
intllib
item_drop
kpgmobs
mesecons
mg
mobs
monorail
moreblocks
moreores
moretrees
my_mobs
nature
panes
pedology
pipeworks
plantlife
player_data
quicksand
snowdrift
stairs2
survival
technic
throwing
torches
unified_inventory
walking_light
weather
windmill
worldedit

If you suggest anything else I'm welcome to hints.

you may not have used a hoe. For wheat, cotton and the such you will have to punch the dirt with a hoe so that dark stripes appear. If you plant the seeds a small version of the plant should appear straight away. If the soil is wet enough, which can be seen in it beeing a darker version, then the plants should grow. Plants only grow when that part of the world is loaded, so you will have to hang around near the plants for a quite long while. Papyrus can be planted directly on dirt near water, cactus on sand with no need of water. Some trees in moretrees need to be closer to water than others or are restricted to certain hights of the terrain.

If you want to add to a rich natural surrounding I would recommend "Undergrowth" and "Bees and beekeeper"

Both add a lot to the atmosphere. Undergrowth will only be present in parts that are generated with it activated though and might lag the mapgenerating somewhat, while the bees will eventually also populate allready generated parts of the map as they are attracted by appletrees and flowers.

No! Nobody said that. The blown-up blocks just don’t wander into your inventory automatically. It does not follow that the items are also lost.

In the default game (“minetest_game”), some blocks are actually completely destroyed, and some other blocks drop as items. It is based on chance.

Read the wiki to learn more: http://wiki.minetest.net/TNT

In fact, the wiki already answers all the questions you had so far:

http://wiki.minetest.net/Pickaxe
http://wiki.minetest.net/Torch
http://wiki.minetest.net/Chest
http://wiki.minetest.net/TNT
http://wiki.minetest.net/Wheat_Seed (including links)
http://wiki.minetest.net/ for more …

However, I can understand that you had problems with crafting. I think Minetest’s crafting system is just utterly flawed, because it is completely unusable without using a wiki or a crafting guide mod or asking someone ;-). You can’t just *guess* all the possible crafting recipes. I may write a longer rant later, but that’s off topic.

...it is the same with vanilla MC...

Uh, I'll try them. I actually was not using the right seeds :)

Yeah, thanks for the links. I've read much of the wiki later on, but at the beginning it was easier to post here. Just a cheap excuse to enter the community ;)

Hello! I am a newcomer too. I had trouble with planting wheat as well. I think there might be a glitch in the farming_plus mod. It took forever to find, but another user posted a fix for it that worked for me. Pertinent links:

Oh thank you, I was actually going to make a post on that issue again one of the following days because it wasn't working with wheat seeds as well. It took me a lot of time to test the correct seeds because in the meanwhile I got some troubles with fire and a Vulcan being -30 blocks under my house LOL
