Tallest mountain I've ever seen
This mountain is exactly 519 meters above sea level. The mapgen is Carpathian, and the seed is shown in the second screenshot.
It's possible to climb to 377 meters; above that is too steep without digging any blocks.
Carpathian is now officially my new favorite mapgen.

Re: Tallest mountain I've ever seen
I seem to recall finding a couple of mountains higher than that in Valleys. I never took any screenshots of them though (or I lost them).v-rob wrote:This mountain is exactly 519 meters above sea level. The mapgen is Carpathian, and the seed is shown in the second screenshot.

I deliberately made one 20 km high once. I remember posting some screenshots of that one. I called it Mount Lookithat.

Re: Tallest mountain I've ever seen
To be honest, I tried Carpathian and I find it boring. The mountains are all smoothed, the flats are sometimes tooooo flat, I haven't found a step mountain with the default values (at least it is hard to see) and it is difficult to find better settings without messing up everything.v-rob wrote: Carpathian is now officially my new favorite mapgen.
Currently I stay with v7 and dream about my own mapgen one day.

How many blocks does one meter contain?v-rob wrote:This mountain is exactly 519 meters above sea level. The mapgen is Carpathian, and the seed is shown in the second screenshot.

I thought the standard measuring system for minetest was one block=one meter

Re: Tallest mountain I've ever seen
Generally I find it annoyingly vertically stretched and of too regular sinusoidal patterns of the slopes what makes it yet more unrealistic. But maybe there are some parts of its worlds that look good.burli wrote:To be honest, I tried Carpathian and I find it boring. I like it too, but try valleys mg as well. If you look around you'll likely find some very interesting and quite pleasant terrain features. It's my favourite.Currently I stay with v7 and dream about my own mapgen one day.

Re: Tallest mountain I've ever seen
Usually it's said that 1 block = 1 meter, but given the original game was primarily intended as a kinda 'coming back to a child's playroom' I would estimate that each block stands for about 65-80 cm in length of its edge (depending on how much childish you feel playing it). I suppose that the subjective perception of the size of blocks is directly proportional to the intesiveness of regression experienced during each session.Andrey01 wrote:How many blocks does one meter contain?

Re: Tallest mountain I've ever seen
Actually, each block represents 1 + y / 10 meters, where y is the altitude in blocks above sea level, so that an altitude (A) in meters is given by the formula . Thus the height of v-rob's mountain would be 14,013 meters, making it nearly 60% taller than Mount Everest.voxelproof wrote:Usually it's said that 1 block = 1 meter, but given the original game was primarily intended as a kinda 'coming back to a child's playroom' I would estimate that each block stands for about 65-80 cm in length of its edge (depending on how much childish you feel playing it). Thats a bit higher than the highest point I found so far (485).
Now its a bit lower (479), since i build a tower with a platform around it.....

v-rob is 106.1m tall O.O , beware of spaghettification!duane wrote: --snip--

--snip, snip, snip--
Player is 1.75m tall (based on player model) and then 1 block is 1.1666..m
EDIT:
OOS:
EDIT:
but yeah, if you want to calculate how tall would be mountain in real life, duane's formula is what are you looking for
otherwise ~1.167m for 1block

Re: Post your screenshots!
"Canyon was once an uninhabitable Mars-like world known as Warhead. It is the second of seven planets around p Eridani A, 22 light-years from Earth. It was used as a military outpost by the Kzinti, until the planet was hit by a weapon called the 'Wunderland Treatymaker' during the Third War. The attack tore a long, narrow, kilometers-deep crater into the crust approximately the size of the Baja Peninsula. The air and moisture in the thin atmosphere gathered at the bottom of this artificial canyon, creating a breathable environment, complete with a sea at the bottom. The planet was then renamed for the crater, and settled by humans in a huge city running up the crater wall. Archaic (hyper-aggressive and intractable) Kzinti were entombed in stasis field shells during the attack and are still beneath the lava, and someday, somebody will have to deal with them."

You've achieved remarkably good looking terrain features, especially in the second picture. My v7 still makes things like this(btw sometimes strongly resembling modern sculptures):sorcerykid wrote:My fave mapgen is still mgv7 with realistic terrain parameters.
Have you modified the parameters?

Re: Post your screenshots!
I've put the terrain into Sq2. It seems like a good fit for minetest. It adds a lot more room to dig without blocking out all of the surface terrain. Building on a giant cliff is fun. I'm going to make the top a vacuum, and maybe put some sort of caves in.azekill_DIABLO wrote:@Is that a new game coming duane? sounds like good sci-fi!
Of course the original was invented by my favorite author, Larry Niven.

Searching the Advanced Settings menu for "font" should reveal all options.
