Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I have been trying to make a minetest video but have been having some problems. I have used recordMyDesktop successfully in the past but for some reason it seems to only record a few frames before flaking out. I have recently switched from xubuntu to Debian 8 + LXDE so I am not sure if that is related or if something has changed in MT that would cause this.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced such problems or can suggest a suitably light-weight alternative.

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I recommend either OBS or SimpleScreenRecorder
OBS (the new version) has quite a few features whilst also being lightweight and not very bloated - such as streaming and view composition (placing text etc)
SimpleScreenRecorder does what it says on the tin. Very simple, very easy, very quick

That sounds ideal, I'll give it a go, thanks!rubenwardy wrote:SimpleScreenRecorder does what it says on the tin. Very simple, very easy, very quick

Do not try to install simplescreenrecorder on Debian 8, I totally destroyed my computer trying.

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
Could you elaborate? I must say that ssr installation on Debian 8 is far from `./simple-build-and-install`, especially it seems with amd64 and fglrx drivers. I gave up on it last night in favour of beer but was planning to have another go today, it looks like it can't find libGLU and likely I just need to update some symlinks. I will see how it goes, this is a relatively new install so I'm not too bothered if I break it but thanks for the heads-up anyway.bigfoot547 wrote:Do not try to install simplescreenrecorder on Debian 8, I totally destroyed my computer trying.

Update: While for some reason I could not convince it that I do have all the necessary libs, I did manage to find this package that works for me at the time of writing.
Thanks for the suggestion, I was going to try that next but SSR seems to have everything I need and is working well now that I have gotten it installed.crazy_baboon wrote:try vokoscreen. My favourite

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I installed SSR using the author's repo:
(x)Ubuntu 16.10 though, not vanilla Debian
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:maarten-baert/simplescreenrecorder
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder
# if you want to record 32-bit OpenGL applications on a 64-bit system:
sudo apt-get install simplescreenrecorder-lib:i386

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I use OBS for my minetest gameplay videos, I really like the ability to record two audio channels, so I can record the games audio and my mic audio separately, and then do audio cleaning on my voice and get the volumes mixed nicely.
SimpleScreenRecorder is what I used when I'm doing something that requires changing between windows, as OBS doesn't do that so well for me. SSR only has one audio though, but usually when I'm doing tutorials I just need my mic's volume anyway.

I record Minetest videos, Mod reviews, Modding tutorials, and Lets plays.

@Nathan and @benrob, thanks for the suggestion, you guys both make excellent videos, I will keep that it mind. I would also be interested to know what editing software you use (if any), I used OpenShot which I found easy to understand and it did the job eventually but was very prone to crashing.

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I wonder... Anyone knows of a screen recording software that can on GNU/Linux and that features mouse-click highlighting?
Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
Kdenlive is relatively easy to use and feature rich.stu wrote: I would also be interested to know what editing software you use (if any), I used OpenShot which I found easy to understand and it did the job eventually but was very prone to crashing.

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I do love SSR and OBS, but they tend to be a bit heavyweight (I have to mention that most people wouldn't consider them to be, I just have a weird obsession with lightweight apps) - you can use ffmpeg to record videos in pretty much any configuration, it's the backend for many GUI apps as well. Suggesting this seeing that you are using LXDE, so you might be interested in a more lightweight manner :)
A command line example would be
ffmpeg -f x11grab -s 1920x1080 -i :0.0 output.mkv
which would encode what you see on your screen (if the resolution is full HD) and put it into a Matroska video container. It really is that simple.

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
After almost a year after my first post, I still stand by OBS. It really just is one of the best, if not the best free (as in freedom) screen recorders/streamers/camera management-ers out there.
I also stand by Blender as an amazing program for editing videos, visual effects, and motion graphics. Its not perfect but it gets better with every release and gets the job done.

No, it isn't. You can barely grab the screen frames this way, and it doesn't even capture audio that way.pengnuin wrote:A command line example would be

Calling OBS studio "bloat" is just uninformed. You're gonna want to record a little bit of microphone audio to explain what you're doing, or just because showing off sound effects doesn't work if you're not even recording audio.
OBS Studio isn't bloat. It does a fantastic job of the basics, which are (1) capture and mix live game, voice and webcam feeds, and (2) stream instantly to various streaming sites.
That's not bloat. Those are the *basics* of what a gaming video maker *needs*.

I can understand why he is so angry.
OBS Studio is one of the best opensource softwares out there, and comparing it to professional software, easy to use and resource friendly.

I used to use SimpleScreenRecorder, but now I use OBS. I'm excited that OBS can live stream :D If only my internet connection was faster....

… and record at the same time. Plus: You can add multiple audio tracks all fed by different configurable sources. You end up with a file having a video stream and audio tracks for ingame sound, commentary, music, etc. you can split from the file and process separately as needed.BBmine wrote:I'm excited that OBS can live stream :D

Yes, you need to mess with that a little but it actually works very well. I used it in my later LP videos.BBmine wrote:Well, I never mess with seperate audio tracks :P

Typically I only spend 5-10 minutes editing. But then, maybe that's why I only have 50 subs.Linuxdirk wrote:Yes, you need to mess with that a little but it actually works very well. I used it in my later LP videos.BBmine wrote:Well, I never mess with seperate audio tracks :P

Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
I put 1-3 hours into editing (audio and video optimization, inserts, music, etc.) depending on what I wanted to achieve and length of the source material.
Re: Best FOSS screen recording software for minetest vids
Point taken, just wanted to clarify that I wasn't calling OBS bloat in any sense of the word - it's a pretty lightweight program and I love using it. Yeah, the audio is bound to be an issue. The setup I was describing was mostly just intended for screencasts and as such is not well suited for recording gameplay. Thanks for clearing that up for folks! :)sofar wrote:I almost stopped reading here... wutpengnuin wrote:I do love SSR and OBS, but they tend to be a bit heavyweight
