a lot of the android forks post very incomplete source code to make it seem like they are not violating the license and still keep the changes they made to themselves.

It would be great to have apps enforced, so I made this checklist: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

In Minetest servers, I hear more and more complaints from some Android players they get annoyed by advertisements.
Apparently a poor soul on the JT2 server recently claimed to have been completely stopped from playing every 15min or so. I forgot the name of the app, however. :-(

This advertisement thing might be a more serious problem than we think, because it destroys the gameplay on online playing.

Another thing which has not been mentioned before:
Some Android and iOS forks even write something about “in-app purchases”. Some stuff I found:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/explora ... 42020?mt=8
Remove ads from app $2.99
VIP player can fly in creative map and more privs $2.99
Buy Coins to unlock maps and enter online worlds $0.99
Buy Coins to unlock maps and enter online worlds $4.99
Buy Coins to unlock maps and enter online worlds $49.99
Buy Coins to unlock maps and enter online worlds $99.99
Buy Coins to unlock maps and enter online worlds $19.99
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/worldcr ... 49324?mt=8
Remove AD $1.99
VIP Server $1.99
Not sure what they are refering to with “VIP Server”.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... .mwpe.gpen
√ Free (It's FREE in a limited time!)
It's not more specific than that. Maybe they mean they treat is like a trial version?

I find it hilarious that such games are allowed to call themselves “free” at all and they get away with it. ;-)
Anyway, it's important to remember in-app purchases are not illegal as such and constitute not automatically a license violation. License violations happen most likely by failing to give credit, not providing the source or “accidentally” deleting the original license file or adding your own arbitrary restrictions.
But I still thought it was important to mention in-app purchases here, especially with prices as high as $99.99 (if anyone is crazy enough to actually pay that).

Request for screenshots
What I like to have (for documentation purposes):
- Screenshot of those ads
- Screenshot of the places where those games ask you for your $$$.

I ask because I like to incorporate those into the wiki page.

Oh, another important question:
Can you please name me good/legit Android / iOS forks?
Meaning they are at least NOT:
  • Full of ads
  • Offering in-app purchases
  • Violating GPL
And maybe are also more or less enjoyable to play. Since I use neither Android nor iOS, I can't really check beyond the app page.

A look at MultiCraft

by Wuzzy » Post

I decided to take a look at MultiCraft. I found the source code of MultiCraft. It looks legit to me, no violation.

https://github.com/MultiCraftProject/MultiCraft

EDIT: Proprietary code and resources confirmed:
Resources games licensed under CC-BY-SA 3.0, unless otherwise stated, and also a bit of proprietary code and resources.

END OF EDIT

I did not use MultiCraft itself (no Android), so I simply used the “default” game as subgame in Minetest to see what happens …
It didn't work immediately, but I just needed to rename a directory and a file. And yes, it actually worked then!
Apparently the MultiCraft engine is still compatible with Minetest.

What becomes immediately apparent that it wants to Minecraft clone, but it just stops halfway there.
Allmost all textures are from the Faithful 32×32 texture pack. The license state of this texture pack is not clear, so this might be a problem.

Typical overworld screenshots:

Image

The v7 overworld is very similar to Minetest Game. The apples are huge. The game DOES have mobs, however. Mobs Redo-based.

Multicraft is too proud to have redstone, has “bluestone” instead. But it also has lapis lazuli, so the ores look very similar … m(

Image

Unsurprisingly this is just mesecons.

Creative inventory is very bugged:
Image

https://i.imgur.com/qwBKFYX.jpg

A lot of items are in the wrong places, the torch cannot be found at all. m(

Flint and stone does not work at all:
Image

These random chests are placed everywhere:
Image
They always contain the same.

Weird torches:
Image

Overall, it's basically a Minetest Game which pretends to be Minecraft. Don't get me wrong it's a playable legit game, but pretty buggy and I'm not really impressed. :P However, it seems to be very friendly on CPU resources AND has mobs, which is a plus.
This would be still nice for Android, but it needs a lot of polishing and bugfixing first.
Some of these bugs might be due to MultiCraft being a different engine.

This thing reminds me a lot of how MineClone looked like before I forked it into MineClone 2.

So if something violates GPL on appstore/googleplay, so we can report it.
Slackware64 14.2, MT 0.4.16. My best mod.

Fighting this scammers on a technical basis or by blaming them in the wiki none of their victims will ever read won't work.

Better extend the Minetest license with an exception that denies advertisement disrupting the server connection when connecting to a regular MT server or playing the game. Then there is a legal thing that would help in fighting them.

Writing down stuff in the wiki was never intended to be “The Solution”, it's just to get a more or less quick and dirty overview, not less and not more. Everyone is welcome to improve the wiki, however.

A license change is probably never going to happen, especially with a clause like yours. The freedom to use the software for whatever (including advertisement) is essential, if we drop that, Minetest would cease to be free software, so that's a no-go. (Look up the Free Software Definition. Or the Open Source Definition, it doesn't really matter, both are very similar.)

A very specific addition that disallows interrupting the connection for advertising or overlaying the display with advertising when connected to MT servers from non-MT clients.

I belive some of these issues you are having is due to playing it as a subgame instead of as an app, ive actually tried multicraft out of curiosity and the ceative inventory and flint and steel worked fine (hint: multicraft uses minetest flint and steel so it only works on blocks like wood).

Adding an exemption would also require all past contributors to either agree to the change or have their code removed.

I talked with him about two years ago. He does not care about that.
I offered to donate money for the development of something specific in Minetest, but it was not interesting to anyone.
In MultiCraft there is a lot of work and I would need the help of a good lua programmer, but at the moment there are not any people wishing to join.
@Wuzzy now MultiCraft_game work correctly ONLY with mapgen_v6.
I'm working on migrating changes from the current version of minetest_game, but I'm not a lua programmer and I can not do it quickly.
If you have enthusiasm, write to me and I will make you an interesting proposal monte48@mail.ua

We like doing LUA, but why should we make mods for MultiCraft instead of Minetest ?? Where are differences ?
To make us<me and bro> support your stuff, you would have to remove in app purchases.

MultiCraft is a "commercial" product. I do not ask to create mods for free.
I invite good developers to work for MultiCraft for the money that I get from "app purchases". It's simple :)

A player on Creative Gardens informed of a "Worldcraft 3D" for iOS, with ads. However, the player had no problem with slowness, lagging, or crashing like most mobile users on the plant/tree-heavy Creative Gardens do.

One sad things is that some people think that Minetest is an "illegal Minecraft ripoff" as they call it. I saw a lot of stupid post of 10 year olds who say "The items go into your inventory? WTF?????? That's so stupid!!!!!!!!"

Well, that the sheer self-deprecation of calling something worth an estimated 55 years of effort (COCOMO model) ”Mine… test” doesn’t really inspire respect in others comes as no surprise to me.
