Field of view (FOV)? 72 degrees?

by Sergey » Post

Image

I have default setting of "Field of view (FOV)" equal to 72 degrees.

But I see both perpendicular directions. So I suppose FOV is no less than 90 degrees.

FOV 180 FTW!
No, it makes stuff odd.

Minetest always feels a bit odd with the default FOV. Minecraft has nearly the same value (70), but it looks different IMHO

For some reason my 180 FOV behaves strange.
Image
120 is probably the best FOV

Seems like FOV depends on the width of your screen. The wider your screen, the higher FOV degree.

FOV depends on corresponding setting in text file. But it seems MT processes this setting incorrectly.
It seems like a bug.

Correct, it's probably the VFOV (vertical FOV) which means you can see 72 degrees from the top to the bottom edge of the screen.
HFOV would be

Code: Select all

FOV * (resolutionX / resolutionY)
meaning on a 1024x768 display with a 4:3 aspect ratio would have a 96 degree HFOV.

There is no "one size fits all" value, really. It depends on your display's aspect ratio (mostly if using horizontal FOV, and Minetest uses vertical FOV just like Minecraft), the distance you are from the display (which is why most console games have a narrower FOV than PC games) and probably some other factors (like, what you are used to in other games).

Personally, I find the default Minetest FOV (72°) appropriate for most use cases (it's a bit wider than Minecraft's default, which is 70°), even though I typically play with FOV set to 75° or so (a small increase). In games that use horizontal FOV, I use 110°, which is slightly more than a 90° 4:3 FOV corrected to 16:9 (which is about 106.67°). I suggest you try several FOV values and see which one suits you the best.

Additional note: with a perspective projection, there is no such thing as a FOV >= 180°, but it is possible with "fisheye" projection, see this comparison for details.

I usually set FOV to ~110 on most games I play, but have 130 on Minetest, and about 90 on Ravenfield

Oh, I'm sure a high FOV has it's benefits, especially when you've got 3-4 eyeballs.

Maybe 3-2 monitors will work better than 3-4 eyes.
