one thing i've thought about is publishing minetest under many names, at the same time
minetest works well for all languages where "test" isn't a native word :P

Basically, any combination of open, free, mine, miner, craft was agreed to be unimaginative and bland, so there's little point suggesting them.

However, I think "Call it Cube, but in another language." isn't doing the trick.
1. It's a common word and won't lead to the game engine called "kuutio" when you search it. Try it and you will see youtube channels by Finnish MineCraft players.
2. It's still generic.
3. It has little to do with the game or its history, the only information we get out of it that it has to do with a cube and one of developers might come from Finnland.

One way to deal with it would be to extend it someway, like "kuutioMT" and then call mintest_game "MTG"/"MTgame", and have "MT" just be those two letters, ignoring their previous meaning. Also MT is already established as an abbreviation of Minetest - we could continue using it.

It would be good to have a connecting element of the engine and the default subgame, so new players will see what belongs together. (Meaning in the hypothetical future that the release would include several subgames.) - While we're at it: Rebranding the game is a huge change, wouldn't it be good to also have a huge change in the game go with it? Like the 0.5 release? Or including other subgames?

Since my detailed reply is now several pages back, let me tl;dr it and suggest "Minetest Launcher" (or similar) again. Is there any reason not to do that? 1.) It keeps the "Minetest" name, so no XBMC/Kodi issues. 2.) It makes it clear what a person is *actually* downloading, installing, and running. 3.) Minetest Game then makes a little more sense. (Minetest Launcher vs Minetest Game is more clear than Minetest vs Minetest Game.)

I feel like this is the best compromise of easy change (not having to "unbrand" the word "Minetest") and clarity for users (so they know what the software is and does).

kuutio was paramats suggestion, I argued why it would be a bad choice.
Suggesting Mesetint wasn't serious. It's an old anagram c55 used at some point.
Manic Digger was another voxel game, but is now abandoned. From all the open source voxel games it's the only one that doesn't have "mine, block, voxel, craft" in it's name.
My idea was to use an affix "MT" somehow in the name to make it less generic, have a connection to the past, and enable to still use "minetest" in some way or the other and see the connection to the new name.

pretty much sums up the overall gameplay, as you are constantly either making stuff, or breaking stuff, (whether you're playing or modding) :P
And it is entirely unique from all other similar game's names.

As I have stated a few times, people will automatically have the general idea of what it is all about, due to the way it has been, is, and always will be described, anywhere it is found on the web.

And..., ahhhhhh, makes for a very nice, short word when it involves coding ; )

I don't think "the best"... I'm just trying to get people to think beyond all of the typical namesakes, which have gone around forever, and have all been way over used and worn out by every other similar software for a while now.

People really need to think way more creatively when it comes to a name.
As I said before in this thread, all these words which reference very obvious aspects, which will be covered by the description in the first place is lame.

It's like beating a dead kitten..., it's disturbing, and steers people away. And it should come with severe penalties.
