Golden Compass -ish project for MT
Is anyone interested in working on a Golden Compass-like project for Minetest?
Probably a base sub-game and specialized/or game-specific mods, and possibly even building a map with this style, and others I have listed below.
Or, maybe it even gets made as just a map project? IDK could use ideas from others
I am just asking because I have been thinking about doing something like this for a while now.
It's gonna need coding, models/mobs, graphics, ideas, etc...
I can do textures, some very basic coding, but it would be nice to get as many people involved as possible.
It is definitely not something I feel I can do alone, and it is not something that would need to be rushed
Might even extend the overall idea to cover some various, but alike themes including The Golden Compass, Hugo, The Time Machine (some other Jules Verne type fantasy works) 20,000 leagues under the sea, Around the World in 80 days, Master of the World) But hopefully you get the idea.

Re: Golden Compass -ish project for MT
style of architecture, textures, mods, landscape, objects such as airships, hot air balloons, etc.MineYoshi wrote:Remake Golden Compass in Minetest?

mechanical gear type animations (and mechanics)
possibly creating various animal mobs to imitate the animals as "souls" for each player's character... so on
and the great polar bears, with armor
Nemo's island, the Nautilus... just this type of stuff n styles
maybe even a bunch of character skins related to it as well?
I guess it could also include styles/ideas from the Wild Wild West tv series and movie.
Any sort of similar "old days with a futuristic twist" type of style
A wishful thing, would be if MT had the ability to design a "choose your own adventure" type adventure game... where certain aspects differ depending upon choices the player makes in certain situations...
Anyone here remember those books from the 70's/80's?

The Golden Compass is the name of the movie adaption of the first book in the His Dark Materials series.
The first book is called The Northern Lights.
There were plans for a second movie, but religious fundamentalists campaigned against it and got it canceled
Luckily there's a BBC adaption as a TV series coming for the end of this year.

BBC is so much better then USA crap tv.
I'm gonna have to watch for that on my "capt jack sparrow" type sites :P
I won't want to miss that..., I had not even known about it... thank you.
And religion ruins everything man...
Awesome stories
and the books are always much better then the movie adaptions

rubenwardy,
Just read a quick story related to the religious claims against the 2d movie.... I'm so pi$$ed off now >:(
http://freethinker.co.uk/2009/12/16/the ... -pressure/
I don't know who are the crazier parties..., the boycotters, or those who listened to them.
In any case..., I hope this idea can get some interest, then they can boycott us too :P (or they could try)
In that situation we could just set sofar loose on them :D
We'll start our own religious sect... Minetestism or Meseism

The cancer is is the Catholic church, the Catholicism has killed a lot of people through time. Also there is fact of Catholic church being one of the richest "organizations" in the world. Faith is not bad, is just religion what blinds the man, believe in a God is not bad, killing for him is what is the bad thing. Don't criticize Christianity, criticize Catholicism, by itself the original Christian church and community never would do all those attrocities. Many of the Catholic people are hypocrite, homophobic (not saying that because they are not ok with homosexuality, the fact is that they actually offend people of this kind) and well, fanatic. If catholicism was erased from earth the image of religion would not be that bad.TumeniNodes wrote:rubenwardy,

I am not against some author showing his extreme Atheism in one of his "pieces of text", actually it's interesting to see what Atheists think of Religion.
Also, you're getting off-topic, please if you are going to make a discussion about religion, please, do it upon Offtopic, else if you are planning to do some kind of game based upon a book then discuss here how you plan to do it, who is gonna help? what is needed? etc..
Have a nice day! :D

Re: Golden Compass -ish project for MT
I am on topic... it was a bit of history of the story / idea :P
So, this is only a preliminary step of putting a solid "idea" together, and then having enough to see that it can go somewhere with nice results.

Whatever... So, are you planning to add some story or something like that, or will it be a "free" game?TumeniNodes wrote:I am on topic... it was a bit of history of the story / idea :P

Re: Golden Compass -ish project for MT
Well yeh, that is the idea... putting a game together with these sort of themes in mind.
I am first trying to decide which would be better to begin with...
opening a "subgame" is the first step, as a place to work from and ideas to spring from.
I think it might be a cool idea to try to design a story for it as you say.
And maybe once the subgame is set up with it's own landscape features, textures, mods, etc... there could be some adventure maps create for it?
It would definitely be a project which is not fast-growing.
But I am thinking there may not be much interest in it anyway... we'll see

Re: Golden Compass -ish project for MT
The point?
Was to try to see if anyone was/is interested in doing a Minetest (subgame), themed around the storyline of the Golden Compass (but not exact), and visually themed around it's style, as well as other stories which have a similar style..., (steam punkish) as well as gear-mechanical punk (<-if that is a term?)
Which would hopefully lead to putting out some nice/fun adventure-type maps
With something a bit more than "just survive", or "just parkour", with goals, such as to find a map, follow the clues and, meet various achievments on the way to the end goal.

Intriguing idea. Also ambitious and probably time intensive.
I've been a developer for a while. Haven't played with Lua because the ROI doesn't look good career-wise, but there is a sense in which programming is programming.
When I think about improving Minetest as a gaming experience, I always come up wanting storytelling and positive social interactions. What are the easiest ways to give players a heroic journey? What are the easiest ways to encourage playing well together? I'm also aware that for the sake of compelling stories, there needs to be some specific conflict. You can set up conflicts between people at the risk of drama, or between the game itself at the risk of drudgery. Get the balance right though, and either can be fun.

Re: Golden Compass -ish project for MT
A story is definitely a key, and much needed.
Then, the story can be broken up into a series of adventure maps (small games)
with puzzles, clues, small quests to obtain certain items required to move onto the next..., but also to have some sort of "end" in sight...
Something like this, can keep people intrigued, and entertained, and keep them coming back, eager for the next chapter, etc.
parkour and survival games are ok but..., they have become a dime a dozen, because people seem to get locked into doing what has already been done... (or following social trends)
Overall, there needs to be a story..., one which can carry on for a while, but changes enough to keep it from becoming boring. There needs to be substance.
