Development has been going on for 6 years, and the game seems to have come a long way.

What do you think Minetest will be like in the year 2030? (You can select all options)

I doubt it. Surely this is a discussion Minetest itself.

I'm sure that in 2030 every actual developer of Minetest will have a real life and will be married. So a new team of developers will replace them.

I'm sure about Minetest officially having Bananas added in 2030 too.

Animals wouldn't be a bad addition though. I would like to see bananas and monkeys in Minetest, it would make me happy, somehow.

Either Minecraft will die and the players will migrate to Minetest, or Minecraft will not die and take notice of us and attempt to sue us even though Minetest is open source so they will fail and lose lots of money and then die. Ok, that last part was a stretch, but still!

Isn't MC dying anyways? I feel that many server pop are decreasing over the course of the year.

Well, predictions are hard, especially when they are about the future.

But this thread seems to be mostly just for fun. So well, here are my 5 cents (don't take it too seriously):


Better: Almost certainly yes. There already have been improvements made to Minetest since this poll started and I doubt they will be will all be reverted by then.

Worse: Very probably no, unless there will be a extreme change in direction to the worse in the near future. 23 years is a time long enough to finally get 1.0.0 out, and this will be automatically better than the current alpha-stage 0.4.15. And if development suddenly stops, it can't get worse. :D

The dev team will be different: Probably yes. It's very likely at least one core dev will leave, or that at least one new core dev will come in. It is extremely unlikely IMO that ALL the devs will be unchanged for 23 years!

C55 will no longer own M l: What is “M I”? A failed attempt to replace the name “Minetest”? I honestly don't know. 23 years is a long time. Maybe celeron55 steps down as a “leader” (whatever that means), maybe the concept of ownership or copyright dies, maybe global thermonuclear war breaks out, maybe, maybe, maybe, …

No more Irrlicht!: I honestly have no idea. But it's a possibility. But that means predicting a better rendering API which doesn't even exist yet.

Minetest won't exist: Almost certainly no, simply because it is very hard to destroy information. That would mean every copy of Minetest would have to be destroyed worldwide. I'd say Minetest (as many other software) would even survive a global thermonuclear war. :D
And Minetest is reasonably popular enough already to survive. Just look at old games.

We'll have Minetest 100!!: Ummm, what? I don't know, and why 100? I'd say “no” because this sounds silly/weird. xD

Development will have halted for some reason and never restarted again: This is certainly a possibility, but I tend to say “no” if you count forks as “restarted development”. But this is very, very hard to predict.

I won't be in the community by then: Absolutely no idea.

Screw this: This is not a prediction at all. :P



You forgot the following predictions:

- Minetest 1.0.0 has been released (Yes)
- There will be mobs in the engine (Yes)
- Minetest is no longer named “Minetest” (I don't know, hopefully not, or it better be the perfect name!)
- Minetest is more popular than Minecraft
- Everyone forgot about this silly predictions thread xD (OK, maybe not)

Maybe Minetest would become a destop server likely KDE, Unity or XFCE. It would be possible, with just the fact that Minetest launched a Chromium windows is too much. I wouldn't mind to open Minetest from Minetest either.
