The Beauty of Minetest (2)

This is the second gallery of images of procedurally generated landscapes of Minetest on imgur: http://imgur.com/gallery/pHDXg .

Maybe for some it'll be strange to see pictures of empty sea etc., but I am looking for the best results attained by possibly the most minimalistic means. To some extend it is due to the influence of the zen aesthetics. Other reason is experimenting with procedurally generated worlds in order to find there hidden sources of excellent art. It is yet another dimension of possible exploration and sometimes it turns into some strange game, when finding something captivating gives a very specific but true satisfaction.

Nice pics. But why did you make another topic for that?

Where did you get the round tree trunks?

Nice pics.

It's thanks to round_trunks mod. But unfortunately it works only with default trees, not in moretrees. When in moretrees mod I prefer to switch it off to maintain congruence of shapes.

I will extend this one in the future. The first one was a dress rehearsal of my concept of contributing to the Minetest development and was partially bungled by my lack of experience.

My concept is based on the fact that searching on google you cannot find many good Minetest screenshots, and google graphics is a crucial source of information for potential users.

So I hope there'll be more galleries like this one in the future, some maybe focused on particular mods, other on texture packs. The developers are making great job but without a proper 'media coverage' so to speak nowadays the great idea will be finally jammed by commercial projects.

I really like what you're doing here. I'm a minimalist myself and have spent a lot of time browsing landscapes in a similar way.

The cheeky use of MT's distance fog interaction with clouds in some pictures is nice.

Practical notes:

Can you publish these under a specific license that allows free distribution, so that people can use these to showcase MT without asking your permission? CC BY-SA 3.0 is what's usually used around here. If you feel particularly selfless CC BY 3.0 or CC0 are more flexible.

Also, 1920x1080 (or more) would be a better resolution if you intend these to be as useful as possible.

Great many thanks for your appreciation :) It's very important to me because probably for the most playing in voxel (or any other) games it has nothing or very little to do with electronic art. I can see sometimes how art emerges out of the procedural formulas and it doesn't stop to amaze me.

I've checked out different kinds of licenses (I haven't yet any reason to do so) . Since my commitment to the Minetest cause is done purely pro publico bono, hereby I declare to all concerned these and future screenshots published on the Minetest Forum to be under license CC-BY-SA 3.0 unless otherwise stated :)

The max display of my laptop is only 1366x768 but I'll try to circumvent somehow this restriction.

Funny, I can't seem to find the round_trunks mod. Could you give me a copy of it or a link?

I noticed you used the classic texture pack. It makes me happy to know that someone uses it.

I honestly feel move to CC BY- SA 4.0 makes more sense.

I hadn't taken the time to review 4.0 yet but now did and yes, it looks to be strictly an improvement over 3.0 for all I can tell.

And here you'll find the list of most of the mods stored at GitHub:

Classic is my preferred for longer sessions. It is obviously a high quality professional work done with regard to the physiology of gaming. When I want more visual stimulation I turn to more saturated colours, but some tps though visually interesting and producing nice static views may burn out one's eyes when not using sunglasses ;)

I've read a summary of 4.0 in my language (I'm not very familiar with the legal terminology, not to mention with english one) and I'm not sure whether this does make any significant difference as far as screenshots are concerned. Maybe when publishing some larger work, e.i. ebook or some software it would be of greater importance.

The only important part of uploading galleries such as this, with the intentions explained, is to read the license of each TP used for shots, and follow them.
Some artists like a link provided, or their name mentioned, so on... some say there is no need to do any of that but, in those cases..., go the cautious route and provide a link to the TP page (cuz people are strange & you never know) ; )

I don't see any need on your end to provide a license, as long as you are following the license/requests for the material used in the screenshots.
But, yeh... if you end up doing a sizable project it would make sense for you to add your own license somewhere Layout and composition, etc. are a lot of work, and a form of art so... good to give yourself a lil' plug for your work and efforts : )

Some nice landscape shots here : )

I haven't posted anything on imgur for a long time, but since I've assembled a nice collection of quite good pictures I'll make another gallery. But first I have to complete exploration of Eden, it is especially interesting for its 'natural sculptures' which give an uncanny feel to this world.
