On which device do you play minetest?

by burli » Post

Please vote on which device you play Minetest. Add some details to this thread

I use a mid range PC with an AMD FX 6300 and Nvidia GTX 750 GPU and 8GB Ram

I know that there is a "post your hardware configuration" thread, but that doesn't include mobile devices

Basic laptop under Ubuntu 16.04, with only 1.8 GB RAM, but works well, even on public servers.

EDIT: I just realised that this is my 500th post !!

I think this is useful information, honestly the tablet version of Minetest needs work... It definitely feels like a game port and many of the features are clunky, that said IIRC the dev team is running low on android devs so I guess I can't blame them :P

Laptop or notebook is a bit nitpicking ;-)

I'm surprised that so many are using laptops, but I'm not surprised that just a few are using mobile devices. I know that this vote is not really representative, but I think that mobile devices are not as common as the devs think.

I use a google pixel xl to test when I am working alone. It works well but I don't use it as a game playing machine.

Why surprised? I switched to a laptop months ago, and it was the best decision I could have made. Gameplay is so much more enjoyable when you aren't tethered to a desk and chair. I get the power of a PC and the portability of a tablet all in one package.

As for mobile devices, I think they are far more common than you realize. This survrey is still only a day old, and the people that read these forums aren't necessarily representative of the entire Minetest userbase :P

The experience on mobile devices is so bad that I'm sure that most who have tried it deleted the app and never gave minetest a second thought.

Pretty much this. I hate Minetest on phone, but I used to use it during long car rides.

I feel confident saying that the majority of players on my server are tablet and phone users (I surmised this because quite a few have told me or else commented about ad interruptions, as well as by looking at their screenshots and YouTube videos. Of course, many have generic names, which is a dead giveaway of an unofficial mobile app too. Assuming even a conservative estimate of 20% of logins are from mobile devices, that still equates to roughly 300 players per day. That's a sizeable number of tablet and phone users.

Do they really play games for a long time or did they just install the app to try it out and then delete it? I tried Minetest on my smartphone and I can't handle it at all. I can't imagine how to play with it.

I wouldn't be surprised if 80% or more of these 20% don't really play for a longer time. Logins doesn't necessarily mean players. I tried it myself several times, but I never played more than 5 minutes

Though I play on laptop, I had to look at videos to understand what works or not on phone/tablet, because I co-admin a server, where many kids play.

Most of those kids just cannot play on PC (they are not allowed to play on PC if any at home).
... but I can tell, they do keep playing because they love the game and have no other choice.

I had a hard time keeping telling them : "use the official Minetest app !".
But it seems that there are still major problems with this app.

The most annoying thing for me is that they can't change their password from the menu.
(It seems that a display bug would not allow them to type or change the password)

My two cents...

It just so happens, you're in luck :) I have statistical reporting scripts on my server that automatically generate spreadsheets about player activity each day. I went ahead and threw the data from December 15, 2017 into Excel to get a better visualization of the various trends.

Note: I am using 20 minute intervals in both charts, hence game days and the corresponding real-world times in hours/minutes are shown.

I can indeed confirm that the vast majority of players (991 in this case) had a cumulative session duration of less than 20 minutes. Even with that said, there are still plenty of players that stayed around for upwards of an hour. More importantly, the survey is merely asking what devices people use to play Minetest, not how long they play :P

Most interesting would be how often a player joins the server. Only players who play regularly are of interest for device statistics. If they are only join once they are not relevant.

Number of logins per player is recorded. When I get time I'll import that data too. I'll extend the reporting period to month as well.

I actually play on a laptop as well. It’s a Dell Inspiron 3520 with i3 core and intel HD graphics 3000. It also has an upgraded 8 gigs ram. It’s great!

unlike most games or anything that use a different engine, minetest have the worst performance for me. like a full featured simulator game runs perfect, Driftgame (minetest subgame) one of the simplest games there, is unplayable...

I use a raspberry pi 5 4 GB ram. Neat little thing and only really struggles on heavily modded servers and ones that are really high in players like your world or Nicos land but i prefer the techage server..
