I've never considered Minetest to be especially beautiful, but I took one look at this, and I was awestruck. I don't know exactly why, but this image is just incredible.

Great thanks, it's extremely satisfying to see such word of appreciation :)) Frankly I use MT mostly as a walking simulator and try to find the most plausible (not necessarily realistic)set of parameters for mg and some mods so that it could provide a pleasurable escape from daily routines. Unfortunately I cannot atm find any spare time to dive into some of my suspended projects (tp, art, large-scale building).

Making 'discoveries' in the generated worlds is quite funny, like finding out that mg Valleys occasionally creates dormant volcanoes :

These days I'm trying to develop a new concept of procedural mapgen that has realistic water features (rivers that flow strictly downhill and never do loops, and all depressions are filled by lakes). I plan to share the code and post a precise description of my project in modding discussion, as soon as possible.

This is the very early stage of a project that is going to be very long and complicated, and that I hope to see completed one day.

EDIT: my project is now described in (too much) details here.

My mapgen project is making progress, I now have a simulation of erosion during pre-processing, which gives a more natural-looking terrain.

Some more pics from today, rivers and valleys are now smoothed, they look more natural.

That is some beautiful terrain, but it definitely doesn't look very practical to build a gigantic castle on :)

I love seeing the rivers combining together, and some of the steep waterfalls further back. It will be cool when we see some thicker rivers as well.

Now I can say there's not a bit of exagerration in calling your mapgen fully professional. However still enjoying rambling through your Valleys, tweaked a lot, what you've presented here is of no comparison to the former mg. Waiting anxiously for next news about this one. You know, as for me at least there's no chance in foreseeable future to embark on a real mountain trail :)

Voronoi influenced mapgen.

The voronoi is not the terrain, but influences a noise, which provides the actual terrain.

The voronoi data is generated at world start, is saved and reused upon relaunch, and can even be shared among worlds. Because of the way that the data is stored, it is provided as a set of two tables, that can be used by other mods, not just mapgens. Currently distance is measured in one of three metrics, chebyshev, manhattan, and euclidean, and all three measurements are provided simultaneously, allowing one to use all resultant voronoi diagrams.

Also, the voronoi cells are recursive, up to the 3rd dimension, again. for all three distance metrics, simultaneously.

Voronoi patchworks are very useful in a number of real-life applications and it's a very interesting and somewhat 'natural' idea to make use of them in terrain generation. But a practical question arises about the unavoidable shortcomings of this method -- how fast is it compared to other mg algorithms used in MT? I guess it's rather slow. Another one is whether you can adapt it to reflect differents kinds of terrain morphology. From your screenshots I take that their easiest and most straightforward use is to generate rolling hills, but, well, I suppose that other procedures do it better (I mean more rounded contour lines of mounds). At any rate an interesting concept, however it's yet to prove its practicability :)
