Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
Hi! We'd like to get some stickers to give out on our stall at freenode live.
The naivest thing to do would be to just use the logo, but this is uninventive and doesn't serve as good advertising as the logo is very unknown. It would be better to have something that incorporates the Minetest name
It would be great to have some suggestions/submissions for sticker designs. The stickers would be die cut with a glossy finish, and should be relevant to people who do and don't know about Minetest

Isn't the correct FOSS geek thing to do is just that though: to serve logo stickers for the laptop lid? :)

Re: Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
Well, the main reason I'm doing this is for that exact reason - for my laptop lid :)
It would just be nice if there was a way of making it more promotional as well - either by including a name or making it interesting enough that people may ask. But not at the cost of making the stickers less cool

Just the Minetest logo with the word "Minetest" below it seems like the best choice.

How would that be cut out?12Me21 wrote:Just the Minetest logo with the word "Minetest" below it seems like the best choice.
Here's an example of a sticker. The shape of it make putting the name at the bottom a bit weird.
Maybe diagonally instead?

Possibly, where the two sides of the tree meet, work the name in there, but following the top edge of each side
Mine on the left, test on the right... and make use of the rules of perspective
I gotta run out, I'm pushing the clock haha

I quickly played around with some perspective and made this, there's an additional one with the text under the tree too.TumeniNodes wrote:Possibly, where the two sides of the tree meet, work the name in there, but following the top edge of each side

They both have white borders, I decided to not add a shadow to them.

Re: Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
How much time before they have to be printed?
Normally a logo isn't informative, but Minetest's logo bucks that trend. The name is still needed but the logo is illustrative enough that I wouldn't worry about its use being uninventive.
However...
If the vinyl cutter works the same as redbubble, I'll just throw it out there that the sticker needn't be one item, so you could give out a mob sticker set in the 1 sticker, and each mob could have the minetest name with it.
Pick mobs on how unique/cool/interesting/cute they look, rather than whether they are common on servers. Some of the prehistoric ones could make good stickers - they have their own distinctive look, but the style still gives clues to what kind of games might be common on Minetest:
Another option is a fancy scene, I can think of a few, e.g. the ones Cisoun made but a scene that can be cut non-square would be more interesting. v7 Floatlands allows scenes that have organic edges.
If it's like redbubble, you can control the outline with white fill and prevent it going into nooks and crannies IIRC, e.g:rubenwardy wrote:The naivest thing to do would be to just use the logo, but this is uninventive and doesn't serve as good advertising as the logo is very unknown. The cheapest UK website I found takes 7 days to ship on the shipping method I'd use, so I'd order them 2 weeks before Live at the latest. That's the 20th.DrFrankenstone wrote:How much time before they have to be printed?

Re: Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
I would guess that shapes like that could be easily done by laser or stencil cutting equipment.rubenwardy wrote: How would that be cut out?
I personally think the name should be clear but not over-stated. Something like this perhaps?rubenwardy wrote:Here's an example of a sticker. The shape of it make putting the name at the bottom a bit weird.

You are also welcome to use my Sam svg but if you are only using a single design then the MT logo is the obvious choice.
Best of luck with the conference.

Couldn't find a good font for DrFrankenstone's suggestion.

MESE! Great idea, but both of those seem to have weird perspective, might be an illusion though.

Re: Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
Yeah, to derail a sticker thread into logotype bloviation... it should be possible to have a font for Minetest thatrubenwardy wrote:Couldn't find a good font for DrFrankenstone's suggestion.
- Is its own thing rather than a derivative of the Minecraft banners.
- Is still thematic for the engine: Voxels/cubes/pixellated/blocky, or grass/stone/air/water, or isometric like the logo, etc.
- Matches the existing logo well enough the logo can be placed beside the logotype
The old logo thread has some attempts:
and I saw an animation with interesting opening credits, but that style might be more suitable for a game than the engine. It seems that gaming is a land where fancy logotypes are still the done thing.
I say it should be possible, but I don't have any answer

Re: Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
It's clear that in addition to its symbol or mark Minetest needs a literal logotype, in the original meaning of the term: stylized letters spelling out the name. But since the name itself is so catastrophically bad and will hurt more than help in marketing, the symbol should be used front and center imo.

Re: Minetest sticker designs (for Freenode conference)
Here's a way of buying stickers, but ones from rubenwardy's proper print run will be cheaper if you have a way to get them, and these ones have some size trade-offs because of the automated vinyl cutter. Putting the name on the white border also isn't possible with the automated cutter, so it has pieces to assemble a design yourself.
